Job summary

Wehave an exciting opportunity to join the Ophthalmology Team at The LeedsTeaching Hospitals NHS Trust as a fellow in our Oculoplastics team. LTHT EyeDepartment is the largest provider of specialist hospital OphthalmologyServices in the Yorkshire Region.

Applicationsare welcomed for this post, which could be held as either full time or parttime. This position would suit a senior higher surgical trainee or post-CCTdoctor who has to demonstrable interest in Oculoplastic.

Thepost is available for an immediate start and will be for a maximum of 6 months.The post will mainly involve outpatient clinics but there may be some surgicalopportunities as well.

Candidatesmust be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license topractice at the time of appointment.

Main duties of the job

Todeliver a wide range of Ophthalmology care and sub speciality care for cases,at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Out-patient clinics

Supervision of patients

Contribute to SpecialistMulti-disciplinary team meetings

Ensure provision of a high standardof care to patients in operating theatre, inpatients, day cases and outpatientsfor both acute and elective conditions

Referrals to other specialists, departmentsand hospitals are timely and appropriate

Tolink with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams withinthe Trust

Tocontribute to research, teaching and new developments within the Ophthalmologydepartment. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute tothe current clinical research programs on going in the department.

Inaddition to the clinical skills, the post holder will be actively involved inresearch and publication.

Thepost holder will also be expected to develop a deeper understanding ofmanagement issues within Teaching Hospital Departments and the wider Trust.

About us

TheEye Department is based at St James University Hospital, Leeds. There are 29consultants in the wider Ophthalmology Department. The team also trainsOphthalmic specialist trainees from the region. We have recently moved into anew outpatient department which has provided us which much more space forpatients and clinicians. The Ophthalmology department provides a comprehensiverange of secondary and tertiary eye (ophthalmic) services for adults andchildren in Leeds and a tertiary eye service for other areas of Yorkshire andbeyond.

Thepost-holder will be carefully supported throughout the first month of thetenure but will be expected to develop more autonomous working patterns asexperience grows. The post-holder will be working at the level of an ST5 orabove.

Thepost holder will be encouraged to contribute to the active research portfolioof the department. Previous post-holders will have presented at national andinternational ophthalmology meetings.

INFORMATIONABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The EyeDepartment in Leeds, which is based at St James University Hospital (SJUH), islooking for an oculoplastic ophthalmology fellow to work for 6 months at SJUH.The post holder will be working with Professor Chang and 3 other consultantswith special interest in Oculoplastic surgery.

DUTIES OF THEPOST

To deliver a wide range of Ophthalmologycare and sub speciality care for adult patients, at the Leeds TeachingHospitals NHS Trust.

Ensure provision of a high standard ofcare to patients in operating theatre, inpatients, day cases and outpatientsfor both acute and elective conditions

Accept and manage referralsfrom other specialists, departments and hospitals in a timely and appropriatemanner

Make referrals to otherspecialists, departments and hospitals in a timely and appropriate manner

Contribute to departmentalmeetings

Contribute to quality improvement,research, teaching and new developments within the Ophthalmology department.

The post holderwill spend 6 months working in the Ophthalmology Department in SJUH.

The post holdermay be expected to cover on-call duties and also see ad-hoc casualty andgeneral ophthalmology patients.

The objectives forthe year would be to further train the post holder in Oculoplastic ophthalmology.

By the end of the 6months, the post holder would be expected to be confident in the management ofOculoplastic conditions.

The post holderwill also be expected to develop a deeper understanding of management issueswithin Teaching Hospital Departments and the wider Trust.

LEVELS OFRESPONSIBILITY

The post-holder will becarefully supported throughout the first month of the tenure but will beexpected to develop more autonomous working patterns as experience grows. Thepost-holder will be working at the level of a post CCT ophthalmologist/trustgrade DR.

TEACHING ANDRESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING

The post holderwill be encouraged to contribute to the active research portfolio of thedepartment. Previous post-holders have published in ophthalmic and VRliterature and have presented at national and international ophthalmologymeetings.

Qualifications

Essential

FRCOphth or equivalent qualification Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at the time of appointment. Eligibility to work in the UK. Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
