About the Role

We are looking to recruit a dynamic and experienced Research and Project Manager to support the commissioning and management of a high profile National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) portfolio of clinical and applied health research infrastructure funding schemes and to provide project management support.


Job Purpose

Reporting to a Senior Research Manager, the role will cover the full end-to-end process of research management, from launching new calls for applications through to the active monitoring of funded awards. You will become the knowledge holder in a funding area e.g. experimental or applied health research. The position also offers the opportunity for important collaborations with the UK government, academia, industry and the clinical community.


Working with the Assistant Director of Research Infrastructure, the postholder will provide project management support for key team activities, including business planning, budget management and project management of the Infrastructure annual reporting process.


Key Accountabilities


Infrastructure Team Project Management:

  • Support the team’s forward business planning and monitoring of progress against milestones
  • Support the budget planning; maintain the team’s SOPs and workflows; and provide project planning and management on ad hoc projects


Project Management for the Infrastructure Annual Reporting Programme:

  • Project manage the end-to-end delivery of the Infrastructure Annual Reporting cycle
  • Work closely with the Senior Research Manager and Research Manager for monitoring and evaluation in the Infrastructure team


Research Management:

Commissioning Research Infrastructure: Delivering new and renewed funding schemes for NIHR:

  • Working across internal and external teams to develop end-to-end processes to support funding calls
  • Contract monitoring and annual reporting: manage any contractual requests/changes


Secretariat for directors fora and activities:

  • Developing an annual programme of meetings to support the networking and collaboration of scheme Directors.


About you

We are looking for someone with a broad perspective of academia, funding, project management and health related policy. You will be confident interacting with your peers and the external scientific community; able to demonstrate critical thinking, and an ability to influence and build productive relationships.


Required Criteria

  • Masters or PhD degree in biomedical or health sciences or equivalent sector experience
  • Research funding/management environment
  • Research management within the NHS or clinical trial/study coordination or applied health
  • Experience of project management
  • Experienced writing reports, briefing documents and data analysis


Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge of the UK’s health and care research and policy landscape
  • Project management qualifications
  • Experience in stakeholder management, across multiple organisations

This is a Twickenham, Middlesex, office based, home working (hybrid) role with an expectation for all employees to attend our offices a minimum of 1 day a week, 4 days a month; the team usually attends the office every Monday.
