The appointed Governor will work strategically with the Governing Body, which maintains a focus on the strategic direction and focus of the School, providing guidance to its leadership team. The Governing Body has a wide range of experiences and backgrounds, all contributing to making Repton one of the foremost education groups in the world.
Governor Responsibilities Contributing to the development and evaluation of Repton's long-term strategy, allowing the executive team to have the scope and confidence to handle the day-to-day challenges, while holding them to account. Providing constructive challenge and support to the executive team and the Governing Body as they tackle both short- and long-term issues. Offering expert independent advice on emerging trends in the technology sector, and the challenges and opportunities they present to Repton School. Engaging with school life beyond Board meetings, such as attending regular or ad hoc events. Ensuring that the Governing Body, leadership and management teams actively promote the well-being of pupils. Together with the whole Board and executive team, ensuring that the appropriate systems and procedures are in place to cover all aspects of the safeguarding agenda and that all statutory Governing Body responsibilities in this domain are firmly met. Candidates need not be local so long as they can travel to the School at least once per term. Main Responsibilities This role is unremunerated; however, reasonable, pre-agreed travel expenses will be reimbursed. The full Governing Body meets three times per year (once per term), in addition to an annual strategy day. This Governor is also expected to join the Finance & General Purposes Committee, which meets three times per year, with potential involvement in a sub-committee for significant capital projects. All meetings take place at the School on weekdays. While in-person attendance is preferred, meetings are always hybrid in format to accommodate those who cannot be in Repton. Governors will be expected to take the time to prepare for meetings and attend ad hoc events such as sports and speech days, which may include extra meetings during shorter terms.
Governors are appointed for an initial term of five years, which can be renewed indefinitely at the discretion of the Board. Governors are required to retire at 75 years.
Repton School is seeking a strategic Governor with a background in property and capital development to join its Governing Body. Candidates should bring substantial experience in property and capital development, offering strategic guidance and oversight during Repton's significant phase of growth and investment. The successful candidate will be able to guide the Board on the long-term Masterplan of the Repton Group, offering insight into repurposing spaces, land and exploring potential partnerships or mergers. Repton is open to candidates from a wide range of backgrounds, such as architecture, property, or development, as long as they can provide oversight and guidance during a key phase of growth and investment, including the estates of the wider Repton Group.
The new Governor will be able to advise on major projects, helping shape the future estate while supporting the COO and Estates Bursar to ensure effective and transparent reporting. They will possess the relevant knowledge to constructively challenge assumptions and bring an innovative approach to enhancing Repton's facilities and long-term infrastructure.
Above all, candidates will believe in the transformative power of education and will share Repton School's commitment to both academic and pastoral excellence. The Board is open to those looking to take on their first board role.
About Repton School Repton School, founded in 1557, is a leading co-educational School situated in the historic village of Repton. Five miles from Burton upon Trent and eight miles from Derby, Repton lies in the very center of England. The School boasts a consistently fine academic record and is active and successful in a wide range of other activities. The School's 600 plus pupils, both boys and girls, are predominantly boarders. Each belongs to one of the ten boarding houses. Repton prides itself on its long and close association with the village.
With the establishment of Repton Dubai in 2007, Repton was a pioneer among UK independent schools in establishing overseas 'branches'. Repton International Schools Ltd has now established a family of six international schools (seven as of September), with four in the UAE, one in China, one in Malaysia and Repton Cairo opening in September. The School takes great pride in its international family and works closely with its overseas partners to ensure that each Repton International school fully reflects the ethos and values of the UK school.
The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Therefore, the following shall be deemed to be included, in addition to the duties that you may be required to perform: Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact.
Under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 it is a criminal offence for a person over 18 (e.g. teacher, matron, sports coach) to have a sexual relationship with a child under 18 where that person is in a position of trust in respect of that child, even if the relationship is consensual. This applies where the child is in full-time education and the person works in the same establishment as the child, even if s/he does not teach the child. Moreover, whatever the age of the pupil, a sexual relationship between an employee and a pupil will be considered an abuse of a position of trust and gross misconduct, likely to result in dismissal.
