Job Description

Job Title: Senior Head of Group Finance

Job Summary:

The Senior Head of Group Finance will be an integral member of the clinical groups Board, participating fully in the agenda for both financial and non-financial performance and arising issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide overall financial leadership and strategic direction, ensuring that finance delivers a high-quality customer-focused service.
  • Take overall responsibility for staff development and performance for the staff in the Financial Management Team.
  • Take overall responsibility for the regular reporting of financial performance management information to the groups and to the relevant Trust Committees/Board.
  • Ensure efficiency, effectiveness, integrity, and business focus of financial systems and processes across the groups.
  • Take a strategic lead for ensuring that the Group operational expenditure is fit for purpose for Service Line Reporting.
  • Deputise for the Associate Director of Financial Management and the Group Management Team as and when appropriate.
  • Make decisions within their own interpretation and understanding of national policies and professional standards.

Line Management Responsibilities:

  • Manage and provide leadership and direction to the members of the group finance team.
  • Provide strategic, financial, and individual objectives to each member of staff.
  • Line manage staff within their respective financial management teams.
  • Take responsibility for recruitment and selection decisions, appraisal, performance management, sickness absence, planning, and agreeing monitoring of departmental workload.

Development and Training:

  • Develop the skills and competencies of staff through training and development activities.
  • Ensure progress towards individual Personal Development Plans is maintained, reviewed, and updated.
  • Support the development and maintenance of the Financial Management training programmes for clinicians and managers at all levels throughout the Trust.

Compliance and Governance:

  • Ensure own and the team compliance with the Trust's mandatory training requirements.

Requirements:

  • Provide support and advice to Groups during the production of business cases.
  • Advise on financial risks and articulate both long and short-term consequences to enable decision making.
  • Ensure that the Associate Director of Financial Management is aware of financial consequences of business cases being approved or in the planning pipeline.
  • Work with the Groups to ensure that benchmarking data provided from the Performance and Information Department is understood at an operational level.
  • Utilise this information together with value for money audits to ensure best practice and optimal utilisation of resources.
  • Work with procurement to negotiate external contracts with suppliers, including provision of financial advice on the outcome of tender evaluations.
