This senior position entails overseeing multiple facets of statistical production, often leading teams of analysts and non-analysts to achieve innovative outcomes for stakeholders. You will have the opportunity to refine your technical skills through ongoing training and development.

Key Responsibilities

In the Government Statistical Service (GSS), each role is unique, reflecting the diverse departments in which they operate. You will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects that require you to:

  • Develop new data solutions and collections by integrating various data sources to better address customer needs.
  • Engage proactively with customers to share analytical findings and discuss results, while considering data limitations.
  • Influence discussions and decision-making processes to ensure robust data collection practices.
  • Advance suitable technologies, tools, and analytical methodologies, serving as a key contact for effective delivery within and across teams.
  • Utilize the most appropriate methods and tools for analysis, adapting your approach as necessary to effectively manage diverse data sources.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality statistical advice and analysis from yourself and your team.
  • Enhance the capabilities of others by sharing knowledge about data sources, manipulation techniques, and innovative practices within your team or across the organization.

Candidate Profile

We seek candidates with proven skills and experience in the following essential areas:

  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, with experience in overcoming challenges while managing a team and prioritizing tasks aligned with organizational goals.
  • Extensive analytical experience, showcasing a strong track record in the practical application of analysis or research, along with a deep understanding of data sources.
  • Experience in managing complex projects and delivering quality outcomes that meet customer expectations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex analyses to non-specialists and engage effectively with senior officials and external stakeholders.
  • Capacity to deliver impactful analysis within tight deadlines, employing forward planning to identify potential risks and issues.

Qualifications

To qualify for this role, candidates should possess or be on track to obtain by September 2024:

  • A first or second class honors degree in a numerate discipline (minimum 2:2 for Statistical Officer) with at least 25% statistical content (such as Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography, Data Science, or similar);
  • OR a higher degree, such as an MSc or PhD, in a field that includes formal statistical training.

Alternatively, candidates may apply if they have:

  • At least two years of experience in a statistical or data science role, demonstrating Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in applying statistics or data science at a level equivalent to a foundation degree or Higher National Diploma.
  • OR achieved or are on track to achieve a level 4 apprenticeship, including a minimum of two years in a statistical/data analysis role in government, with evidence of continuous professional development.
