Role Responsibilities

As a senior statistician, your role will encompass:

This senior position entails overseeing various facets of statistical production, often leading teams of analysts and non-analysts to achieve innovative outcomes for stakeholders. You will also have opportunities to refine your technical skills through continuous training.

Key Duties

In the Government Statistical Service (GSS), every role is unique, reflecting the diversity of the departments involved. You will be tasked with:

  • Developing new data solutions by integrating multiple data sources to better serve customer requirements.
  • Engaging proactively with clients to share analytical findings and discuss results while considering data limitations.
  • Influencing discussions and decision-making processes to ensure robust data collection.
  • Advancing suitable technologies and analytical methods, serving as a primary contact for effective delivery across teams.
  • Utilizing appropriate methodologies to conduct analyses, adapting approaches as necessary to handle various data sources.
  • Ensuring the delivery of high-quality statistical advice and analysis from yourself and your team.
  • Enhancing the capabilities of colleagues by sharing knowledge on data sources and innovative practices.

Candidate Profile

We seek candidates with proven skills and experience in the following areas:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to navigate challenges while managing a team and prioritizing tasks aligned with organizational goals.
  • Extensive analytical experience, showcasing a history of applying analysis or research with a deep understanding of data sources.
  • Experience in managing complex projects and delivering quality results that meet client expectations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of conveying complex analyses to non-specialists and engaging effectively with senior officials and stakeholders.
  • Ability to produce impactful analyses under tight deadlines, utilizing strategic planning to identify potential risks.

Qualifications

To qualify for this role, candidates should possess or be on track to obtain by September 2024:

  • A first or second class honours degree in a numerate field (minimum 2:2 for Statistical Officer) with at least 25% statistical content (e.g., Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography, Data Science, or similar);
  • Alternatively, a higher degree (MSc or PhD) in a field with formal statistical training.

Additionally, candidates may apply if they have:

  • A minimum of two years of experience in a statistical or data science role, demonstrating Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in relevant skills.
  • A level 4 apprenticeship, including at least two years in a statistical/data analysis role within government, with documented CPD.
