Manager of Biodiversity Initiatives

Overview

This role is pivotal in advancing The Crown Estate's strategic vision to enhance ecological diversity and implement nature restoration and carbon offset initiatives across a vast rural estate encompassing 120,000 acres of agricultural land throughout England.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and propose innovative and feasible nature restoration projects that yield measurable outcomes and cost-effectiveness, ensuring their successful execution;
  • Cultivate and sustain partnerships with farmers, local communities, regulatory bodies, funding organizations, conservation groups, and other essential stakeholders to execute exemplary nature restoration initiatives;
  • Collaborate with farmers and management teams to implement effective conservation practices, overseeing projects aimed at habitat enhancement and creation;
  • Enhance existing environmental strategies to create tailored short-, medium-, and long-term ecological plans for each estate;
  • Partner with colleagues to establish metrics, data collection, and monitoring frameworks, tracking progress and documenting results;
  • Work alongside rural and sustainability teams to position The Crown Estate as a premier rural landholder with a proven history of successful nature restoration projects integrated with sustainable agricultural practices;
  • Engage collaboratively with Ecologists at various locations to exchange insights and expertise.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in conservation and habitat enhancement at both farm and landscape levels;
  • Extensive background in collaborating with farmers and rural communities, with a solid understanding of agricultural practices and their environmental implications;
  • Proven ability to work effectively with internal and external partners, stakeholders, and the public;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ecosystem services and natural capital evaluation and accounting;
  • Possession of at least one recognized industry qualification (e.g., CIEEM);
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a passion for building productive relationships;
  • Proven project management capabilities, with attention to detail and the ability to prioritize effectively;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of engaging diverse audiences;
  • Proficient in data management, with GIS experience being an advantage;
  • Familiarity with grant funding and subsidy application processes;
  • Competence in developing budgets and business proposals.
