We are in search of a skilled and experienced Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Specialist to become a vital part of our team, dedicated to supporting our clients in achieving their environmental goals.

The ideal candidate will be instrumental in managing and directing planning initiatives, particularly those aimed at biodiversity conservation and enhancement. This role demands a comprehensive understanding of biodiversity legislation, the Statutory Metric, relevant policies, and best practices, alongside a proven history of collaboration with governmental entities such as DEFRA, Natural England, and Local Planning Authorities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee planning initiatives focused on achieving Biodiversity Net Gain.
  • Provide expert consultation on biodiversity conservation and enhancement strategies to internal teams, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Conduct assessments, surveys, and impact evaluations to guide planning decisions and mitigation approaches.
  • Collaborate with the in-house ecology team to develop and execute Biodiversity Net Gain strategies and action plans in line with applicable legislation, metrics, policies, and guidelines.
  • Engage with governmental bodies, including DEFRA and Natural England, to ensure adherence to biodiversity regulations and secure necessary permits or approvals.
  • Foster and maintain positive relationships with Local Planning Authorities, conservation organizations, Wildlife Trusts, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Work alongside multi-disciplinary teams, including ecologists, landscape architects, and engineers, to incorporate biodiversity considerations into planning proposals.
  • Stay informed about emerging trends, research, and developments in biodiversity conservation and planning policy to enhance decision-making and best practices.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive reports, including Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans and Biodiversity Gain Plans, to clients, regulatory bodies, and community groups as necessary.
  • Mentor and guide junior staff members in understanding and applying biodiversity-related planning processes and requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Planning, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental planning.
  • Extensive knowledge of biodiversity legislation, policies, and guidelines, including relevant national and local planning policies.
  • A proven track record of successfully managing planning projects with a focus on biodiversity, including experience in preparing and implementing Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) plans.
  • A strong understanding of ecological principles and methodologies, including habitat assessment, species surveys, and ecological impact assessment.
  • Experience in engaging with governmental bodies such as DEFRA, Natural England, and Local Planning Authorities, with established contacts and relationships.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to diverse audiences effectively.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to assess and mitigate biodiversity impacts within the planning context.
  • Proficiency in relevant software and tools used in planning and biodiversity assessment, such as the Statutory Metric, GIS, ecological modeling software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
