Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and direct planning initiatives with a primary emphasis on achieving Biodiversity Net Gain.
  • Offer expert consultation on biodiversity conservation and enhancement strategies to internal teams, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Conduct thorough assessments, surveys, and impact evaluations to guide planning decisions and mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with the in-house ecology team to devise and execute Biodiversity Net Gain strategies and action plans in alignment with applicable legislation, metrics, policies, and guidelines.
  • Engage with government entities, including DEFRA and Natural England, to ensure adherence to biodiversity regulations and obtain necessary permits or approvals.
  • Build and sustain positive relationships with Local Planning Authorities, conservation organizations, Wildlife Trusts, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Work alongside multidisciplinary teams, including ecologists, landscape architects, and engineers, to incorporate biodiversity considerations into planning proposals.
  • Stay informed about emerging trends, research, and developments in biodiversity conservation and planning policy to enhance decision-making and best practices.
  • Prepare and deliver reports, including Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans and Biodiversity Gain Plans, presentations, and proposals to clients, regulatory bodies, and community groups as needed.
  • Mentor and guide junior staff in understanding and executing biodiversity-related planning processes and requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Planning, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental planning.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of biodiversity legislation, policies, and guidelines, including relevant national and local planning policies.
  • Demonstrated success in managing planning projects focused on biodiversity, including experience in developing and implementing Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) plans.
  • Strong grasp of ecological principles and methodologies, including habitat assessment, species surveys, and ecological impact assessment.
  • Experience engaging with government bodies such as DEFRA, Natural England, and Local Planning Authorities, with established contacts and relationships.
  • Exceptional communication skills, capable of conveying complex technical information to diverse audiences effectively.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to assess and mitigate biodiversity impacts within the planning context.
  • Proficiency in relevant software and tools utilized in planning and biodiversity assessment, such as the Statutory Metric, GIS, ecological modeling software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
