Position Overview

We are excited to present an opportunity for a proactive and visionary leader to take on the role of Head of Maternity Services at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire.

This position entails providing influential and visible leadership within the organization, serving as a pivotal member of the Corporate Nursing, Midwifery, and AHP Leadership Team, while also collaborating with essential partners across the Local Maternity and Neonatal Network (LMNS) and the Coventry and Warwickshire Integrated Care Board (ICB). The ideal candidate will be dedicated to ensuring exceptional quality, safety, and patient satisfaction while achieving corporate goals. This role is crucial in aiding the Trust to realize its ambition of becoming a leader in healthcare on both national and international stages.

Key Responsibilities

The Head of Maternity Services will collaborate closely within the leadership team to champion and advocate for safe, effective, sustainable, and responsive maternity and neonatal care for all women, infants, birthing individuals, and their families. The post holder is expected to lead and inform complex transformations and enhancements through collaboration and mature partnership working. Reporting to the Chief Nursing Officer, the Head of Maternity Services will be accountable for the strategic leadership of the midwifery workforce and the overall safety and quality of perinatal services. The primary objective of this role is to advance maternity improvement and safety initiatives across the service to uphold and enhance current standards, demonstrating improved clinical outcomes.

Job Responsibilities

  • To inspire a shared vision and ensure the maternity and neonatal Perinatal strategy is developed with the engagement of key stakeholders and subsequently executed utilizing all available resources efficiently and effectively.
  • Formulate workforce plans to ensure the sustainability of the service, including the provision of education and training to meet the needs of colleagues.
  • Guarantee safe staffing levels with a clear escalation and mitigation policy.
  • Support systems that empower staff to raise concerns and ensure accountability for addressing issues raised through a culture of openness.
  • Seek diverse information and leverage it to generate innovative ideas and formulate effective plans for improvement or change.
  • Lead and manage clinical governance systems, ensuring the Trust Board has oversight of the quality and performance of maternity and neonatal services, and that lessons learned from investigations are implemented.
  • Maintain professional accountability to the Chief Nursing Officer for the leadership of the midwifery nursing professions.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Quality and Chief Nursing Officer to provide assurance to the Trust Board regarding the quality of care delivered, prioritizing patient experience.
  • Advocate for safe, high-quality maternity care in partnership with maternity providers across Coventry and Warwickshire, Maternity Voices Partnership (MVP), Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS), and educational institutions.
  • Be accountable for continuously driving improvement and leading transformational change.
