Position Overview

The successful candidate will be a proficient maternal imaging specialist, recognized as a prominent and approachable leader within the team, overseeing service delivery and resource management. You will be empowered to make informed choices within your professional domain and will provide support to fellow sonographers in delivering a high-quality ultrasound service.

Your primary responsibility will be to independently conduct and interpret a comprehensive range of obstetric scans. This includes assessments for viability, gestational age, first-trimester screenings, anomaly evaluations, growth monitoring, amniotic fluid assessments, Doppler studies, uterine artery evaluations, placental imaging, including transvaginal techniques, and any necessary obstetric scans throughout the pregnancy.

Effective communication is essential, particularly when conveying potentially distressing findings to expectant parents, ensuring appropriate referrals are made. You will also be tasked with documenting reports for medical professionals and maintaining accurate records.

Clinical Duties

  • Deliver a specialized technical service utilizing ultrasound technology for diagnostic purposes. You will analyze intricate data to extract maximum diagnostic insights while considering any anatomical or pathological constraints.
  • Possess extensive specialist knowledge across a broad spectrum of ultrasound procedures, demonstrating in-depth expertise in specific areas comparable to senior medical professionals.
  • Exhibit the necessary technical proficiency to operate ultrasound equipment safely and effectively.
  • Conduct scans in diverse environments, including both primary and satellite facilities.

Job Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Conduct and report on obstetric ultrasound examinations independently, with the option to consult with colleagues and referring physicians in complex cases. These examinations may involve inpatients, outpatients, or obstetric referrals.
  • Utilize independent judgment during ultrasound assessments to accurately distinguish between normal and pathological findings, subsequently analyzing the scan data and medical history to generate reports for the relevant healthcare providers.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of patients undergoing ultrasound examinations, maintaining cleanliness of equipment and a tidy workspace.
  • Oversee the cleanliness and safety of the department, coordinating with facilities management as needed.
  • Assist the Superintendent in leadership and management tasks.

Communication Skills

Strong communication abilities are crucial for this role, particularly in interactions with multidisciplinary teams and patient care.

With patients:

  • Facilitate a comfortable environment to encourage cooperation.
  • Provide verbal updates to maternity patients to alleviate anxiety.
  • Communicate complex and sometimes distressing information to patients with clarity, empathy, and professionalism.

With colleagues:

  • Deliver clear, written reports to referring clinicians to aid in patient management.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and clinicians to address potential issues identified during scans.
  • Coordinate with medical and administrative staff regarding follow-up appointments.
  • Maintain professionalism in all interactions.

Leadership and Management

Demonstrate leadership and management capabilities in the following areas:

  • Accountability for personal actions in line with professional conduct standards, contributing to organizational objectives and performance targets while adhering to local and statutory guidelines.
  • Ensure appropriate clinical examinations are conducted within the department.
  • Engage in management responsibilities to support the Superintendent.
  • Utilize the maternity information system for data entry and tracking.
  • Promote adherence to health and safety policies designed to protect staff and service users.
  • Participate in clinical incident reporting, investigations, and audits.

Educational and Training Responsibilities

The maternal imaging specialist is expected to:

  • Supervise and mentor student sonographers throughout their training.
  • Provide training and guidance to consultants and junior medical staff.
  • Engage in ongoing training to stay updated on best practices and advancements, supporting revalidation and continuing professional development.
  • Contribute to team meetings and discussions.
