Position Overview

The Ministry of Defence is seeking a committed and skilled individual to join the admiralty pilot training program, ultimately leading to certification as a fully qualified admiralty pilot. This role is essential in providing expert guidance and support to commanding officers and captains, representing the King’s Harbour Master (KHM).

Role Responsibilities

As part of the KHM organization, admiralty pilots play a crucial role in ensuring the safe navigation of vessels within the Dockyard Port of Plymouth. They are responsible to the KHM through the Chief Admiralty Pilot (CAP) for the execution of their duties.

The key responsibilities include:

  • Offering navigational advice to commanding officers, captains, and bridge teams of His Majesty’s Ships.
  • Taking full command of auxiliary and commercial vessels as required.
  • Assuming responsibility for the safe transit of vessels utilizing tugs and other assets.
  • Providing relevant pilotage information to commanding officers and Masters of vessels.

Training and Development

As a trainee admiralty pilot, you will be expected to complete the admiralty pilot training program. This includes observing and participating in pilotage activities alongside a qualified admiralty pilot, as well as undergoing tug familiarization training. Throughout your training, you will document your experiences and complete two examinations to obtain your limited ships pilot license, followed by a practical examination for your all ships pilot license.

Upon successful completion of the training, you will be integrated into a roster system providing 24/7 pilotage support, with a maximum of 2400 hours annually. This will involve being on call and responding within one hour when required.

Professional Development

To maintain high standards of proficiency, admiralty pilots must engage in continuous professional development and mandatory training as dictated by the Ministry of Defence. Additional responsibilities may include conducting port familiarization runs for commanding officers and bridge teams, attending meetings, and performing other pilotage-related tasks.

Furthermore, you will be required to qualify as a compass adjuster and conduct compass adjustments for MOD vessels, as well as undertake short-term detached duties for training purposes.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must possess one of the following qualifications:

  • STCW II/2 command qualification or RN equivalent (CQ2) along with command or senior deck officer experience.
  • Recent employment and authorization as a pilot within another pilotage authority (not PEC).

All candidates must hold an ENG1 medical certificate. Evidence of qualifications will be required during the interview process, and all declared licenses must be valid at the time of application.

Key Competencies

During the selection process, candidates will be assessed on the following competencies:

  • Leadership
  • Effective Decision Making
  • Collaborative Working

Benefits

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary, with contributions from the Ministry of Defence towards membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
