Admiralty Pilot Training Position

Position Overview
The Ministry of Defence is seeking a committed and skilled individual to join the admiralty pilot training program, which will lead to becoming a fully qualified admiralty pilot. This role is crucial in providing expert guidance and support to commanding officers and captains on behalf of the King’s Harbour Master (KHM).
Role Responsibilities
As part of the KHM organization, admiralty pilots play a vital role in ensuring the safe navigation of vessels within the Dockyard Port of Plymouth. Under the supervision of the Chief Admiralty Pilot (CAP), you will be responsible for:
- Delivering pilotage assistance to the commanding officers of designated vessels, adhering to established protocols and standards.
- Assuming full accountability for the safe transit of vessels utilizing tugs and other resources.
- Providing essential pilotage information to commanding officers and vessel Masters regarding the Dockyard Port of Plymouth.
Training and Development
As a trainee admiralty pilot, you will be required to complete the admiralty pilot training program. This will involve:
- Observing and participating in pilotage operations alongside a qualified admiralty pilot.
- Engaging in tug familiarization training.
- Documenting your training experiences and successfully passing examinations to obtain your limited and all ships pilot licenses.
Upon completion of the training, you will be expected to participate in a roster system that provides pilotage services year-round, including on-call duties requiring a response within one hour.
Professional Development
To maintain high standards of proficiency, admiralty pilots must engage in continuous professional development and mandatory training as required by the Ministry of Defence. Additional responsibilities may include:
- Conducting port familiarization runs for commanding officers and bridge teams.
- Participating in meetings and other pilotage-related activities.
- Qualifying as a compass adjuster and performing compass adjustments for MOD vessels.
Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants must possess one of the following qualifications:
- STCW II/2 command qualification or RN equivalent (CQ2) along with command or senior deck officer experience.
- Recent employment and authorization as a pilot within another pilotage authority (not PEC).
All candidates must hold an ENG1 medical certificate. Evidence of qualifications will be required during the interview process.
