Position Overview

The Ministry of Defence is seeking a committed and skilled individual to join the admiralty pilot training program. This initiative is essential for ensuring the safe navigation of vessels within the Dockyard Port of Plymouth, a critical operational hub for the Royal Navy and allied maritime forces.

Role Responsibilities

As a trainee admiralty pilot, you will be integral to the King’s Harbour Master (KHM) organization, responsible for:

  • Providing expert pilotage assistance to commanding officers and bridge teams of designated vessels.
  • Ensuring the safe transit of ships, including those without their own propulsion, utilizing tugs and other resources.
  • Offering guidance on pilotage requirements pertinent to the Dockyard Port of Plymouth.

Training and Development

Your journey will involve comprehensive training under the supervision of qualified admiralty pilots. This includes:

  • Participating in pilotage operations and observing experienced pilots.
  • Completing tug familiarization training and maintaining a detailed log of your training experiences.
  • Passing two examinations to obtain a limited ships pilot license, followed by a practical assessment for the all ships pilot license.

Upon successful completion of the training, you will engage in a shift system providing 24/7 pilotage support, with a commitment of up to 2400 hours annually, including on-call duties requiring a prompt response.

Professional Development

Continuous professional development is vital, and you will be expected to undertake mandatory training and additional tasks as directed by the Chief Admiralty Pilot (CAP). This may include port familiarization runs and other pilotage-related responsibilities.

Qualifications and Requirements

To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:

  • STCW II/2 command qualification or an equivalent Royal Navy qualification, along with relevant command or senior deck officer experience.
  • Alternatively, recent employment and authorization as a pilot within another pilotage authority.
  • An ENG1 medical certificate is mandatory.

All qualifications and licenses must be valid at the time of application.
