Position Overview

ADVANCED CLINICAL RESEARCH FELLOW IN SPINAL SURGERY

We are seeking applications for the role of Advanced Clinical Research Fellow in Spinal Surgery. This position is designed for individuals who are eager to enhance their expertise in spinal surgical practices.

The successful candidate will collaborate with a team of nine dedicated Spinal Orthopaedic Consultants, who are engaged in a wide range of spinal surgical procedures, including but not limited to degenerative conditions, tumours, and scoliosis in adult patients. Our facility is recognized as a leading centre for spinal surgery and trauma.

Key Responsibilities

The selected individual will have the opportunity to gain comprehensive experience in various facets of spinal surgery. An active research initiative is in place, supported by basic science laboratory facilities. The Centre is affiliated with a prominent university, providing excellent postgraduate training resources.

The role requires the post holder to operate at a Senior Specialty Registrar level and to participate in the on-call rota for spinal services.

This position is not accredited for educational purposes and will not provide a National Training Number.

As a teaching health board, we maintain strong connections with a leading university, which plays a significant role in training future medical professionals.

References will be necessary to cover a minimum of three years of prior employment and/or training.

It is essential for candidates to possess FRCS Orth or FRCS Neurosurgery or an equivalent qualification.

Qualifications

Essential

  • FRCS Orth or SN or equivalent

Desirable

  • Intercalated Degree
  • MSc or PhD
  • Academic Excellence (Prizes, merits, distinctions, etc.)
  • AO Spine Diploma or equivalent
  • ATLS Instructor or Training the Trainer or equivalent.

Previous Experience

Essential

  • 6 months of postgraduate experience in Spinal Surgery (Higher Surgical Trainee or equivalent)

Desirable

  • Prior experience as a Senior Spinal Trainee or Spinal Fellow or equivalent

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Essential

  • Current knowledge of medical practices
  • Effective communication skills in written and spoken English for medical discussions with patients and colleagues

Desirable

  • Ability to perform basic spinal surgical procedures under supervision
  • Leadership experience or relevant qualifications

Special Interests

Essential

  • Evidence of presentations at peer-reviewed meetings or publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience in Quality Improvement/Audit projects or equivalent

Desirable

  • Research experience specific to spine surgery
  • Evidence of completed Audit loop.
