Position Overview
Fixed-Term Appointment for 6 Months
We are seeking applications for a Junior Clinical Fellow within the Microbiology division at Public Health Wales (PHW). The successful candidate will engage in responsibilities at a prominent healthcare facility, primarily contributing to the microbiology and virology laboratory that supports clinical infection services.
The Microbiology department in Cardiff is among the largest in the region, providing essential microbiological services across various healthcare settings. This includes acute microbiology services for hospitals and community health services, along with specialized reference microbiology services for Wales and beyond. All laboratories maintain UKAS accreditation.
Key Responsibilities
The appointee will integrate into the clinical infection team, tasked with interpreting and conveying significant laboratory results to both inpatient and outpatient medical teams. Participation in specialist infection multidisciplinary team meetings, ward rounds, and clinical case discussions is expected. The team comprises consultants and specialists in Microbiology, Virology, and Infectious Diseases, collaborating closely with clinical and biomedical scientists, as well as the infection control unit.
Supervision will be provided by the on-call clinical microbiologist, virologist, or infectious diseases consultant during the week.

Job Requirements
This position does not involve on-call duties. While not formally recognized for training, the role follows a training structure and supports attendance at relevant academic meetings.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Medical Degree
- Post F1/F2 training
- Full registration with GMC or equivalent

- Familiarity with Medical Microbiology or Infectious Diseases
Experience

- Completion of F1/F2 training or equivalent
- Experience in General Medicine
