Position Overview

THIS IS A FIXED TERM POSITION FOR 6 MONTHS DUE TO FUNDING

We invite applications for a Junior Clinical Fellow within the Microbiology division at Public Health Wales (PHW). The successful candidate will engage in responsibilities at a major healthcare facility, primarily within the microbiology and virology laboratory, contributing to clinical infection services. Opportunities will also be available to collaborate with the infectious diseases team, supporting various clinical settings.

The Microbiology unit in Cardiff is among the largest in the region, encompassing multiple laboratory facilities. It provides essential microbiology services for a wide array of healthcare institutions, community services, and general practitioner practices. The laboratory is accredited and offers specialized services in virology, mycobacteriology, molecular diagnostics, and pathogen genomics across Wales and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be an integral part of the clinical infection team, tasked with interpreting and communicating critical results to both inpatient and outpatient healthcare teams. Participation in multidisciplinary team meetings, ward rounds, and clinical case discussions will be expected. The team comprises consultants and specialists in Microbiology, Virology, and Infectious Diseases, collaborating closely with clinical and biomedical scientists as well as the infection control unit.

Supervision will be provided by the on-call clinical microbiologist or infectious diseases consultant during the week.

The candidate will be encouraged to engage in educational, teaching, and research initiatives within the department. Job Responsibilities

This position does not entail on-call duties.

While this role is not formally recognized for training, it mirrors the structure of a training position and supports attendance at relevant academic meetings and study requirements.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • Medical Degree
  • Completion of Foundation Year 1 and Year 2
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council or equivalent

  • Familiarity with Medical Microbiology or Infectious Diseases
