Job Overview

The Nursing Unit Supervisor is tasked with delivering high-level clinical leadership and oversight within a designated clinical area. This role involves direct management and accountability for the assigned human and material resources, ensuring adherence to the established financial framework. The individual in this position will hold ongoing responsibility for the safety and operational management of the unit, implementing strategies to sustain service delivery and ensure quality patient care.

The Nursing Unit Supervisor is expected to possess specialized clinical knowledge and skills pertinent to their area of expertise. They will guide the team in delivering high-quality, efficient, and safe evidence-based nursing care, fostering best practices and optimal patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

This position is characterized by a balance of 20% clinical duties and 80% managerial responsibilities. The Nursing Unit Supervisor will engage directly with staff and patients, serving as a visible role model; promoting best practices from a clinical standpoint; and addressing the coaching, mentoring, and appraisal needs of team members as they arise.

The individual will have a significant influence on the working environment for both patients and staff, overseeing aspects such as cleanliness, medical equipment, infection control, health and safety, staff morale, food services, and the dignity and respect afforded to all individuals.

The Nursing Unit Supervisor will be responsible for monitoring staffing levels and skill mix, ensuring that rosters are safe, efficient, and aligned with the patient dependency levels on their unit, promptly escalating any identified issues.

Additionally, the Nursing Unit Supervisor will serve as the Designated Person for the decontamination unit within the Urology Investigation Unit (UIU). This includes overseeing decontamination processes and ensuring compliance with both local and national standards. Collaboration with decontamination users and operators will be essential to support service delivery and local practices. The supervisor is expected to address any issues identified during inspections or audits and report findings along with proposed solutions on a quarterly basis.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (Adult Nursing)
  • Completion of a recognized management and leadership program
  • Qualification in Teaching and Assessment
  • Advanced communication skills certification

Desirable Qualifications

  • Qualification in urological or oncological nursing
  • Training as specified in HTM 01-06

Essential Experience

  • Extensive experience in a senior nursing role
  • Proven experience in team leadership and management
  • Background in outpatient settings
  • Experience in urological or oncological nursing

Desirable Experience

  • Understanding of Infection Prevention Control and Decontamination standards

Essential Skills

  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities
