Family Engagement Worker - HMP Onley

Salary: £17,150 (Actual earnings; £25,725 per annum FTE)
Hours: 25 hours per week: Monday-Sunday (weekend working required - Rota TBC)
Location: HMP Onley, Rugby, Warwickshire
Role Overview:
As a Family Engagement Worker, your primary responsibility will be to deliver essential family-centered casework. This includes conducting assessments, providing advocacy, implementing structured interventions, and facilitating family visits, both in-person and virtually. Your aim is to foster continuity of care and support for family members and caregivers, thereby enhancing the health and well-being of incarcerated individuals and their families throughout and following their incarceration.
Key Duties:
  • Family-Centric Assessments: Perform thorough assessments to collect pertinent information, evaluate risks and needs, and devise suitable support and intervention plans involving prisoners, family members, and significant others.
  • Implement Supportive Interventions: Execute and evaluate interventions designed to nurture and strengthen the bonds between prisoners and their families during their time in custody.
  • Referral and Ongoing Support: Facilitate timely referrals to appropriate agencies and programs within the prison and community to ensure continuous support and achievement of casework goals.
  • Visit Coordination: Organize and oversee both in-person and secure video family visits, ensuring all participants are treated with dignity and respect, while addressing the needs of children.
  • Advocacy and Emotional Support: Offer practical and emotional assistance to families, advocate on their behalf, and ensure their perspectives are acknowledged and valued.
  • Collaborative Efforts: Work collaboratively with other teams, prison personnel, and healthcare professionals to ensure that casework and interventions are suitable and effective.
  • Documentation: Maintain precise and timely case records in accordance with relevant policies and procedures.
  • Team Engagement: Support and mentor volunteers, engage in supervision and appraisal processes, and contribute to team and partnership meetings.
Essential Qualifications:
  • Professional Boundaries: A solid understanding of professional boundaries within a statutory or secure environment.
  • Criminal Justice Acumen: Familiarity with the criminal justice system gained through academic study or practical experience.
  • Trauma-Informed Approach: Knowledge of trauma and adverse childhood experiences through academic study or relevant experience.
  • Safeguarding and Data Protection: Understanding of safeguarding principles and data security protocols.
  • Relevant Experience: At least three of the following:
    • Conducting structured interviews
    • Assessing individuals and/or families
    • Planning and/or coordinating casework interventions
    • Supporting individuals or families during crises
    • Referring to other support services
  • Communication Proficiency: Exceptional communication and listening skills, with the ability to build rapport and advocate effectively.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational capabilities and the ability to manage a demanding workload.
  • Emotional Resilience: Capacity to remain composed under pressure and navigate challenging situations.
  • Teamwork and IT Competence: Effective collaboration and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Integrity and Professionalism: High standards of personal integrity, accountability, and professionalism.
Desirable Attributes:
  • Volunteering Insight: Knowledge and experience related to volunteering roles.
  • Experience in Secure Settings: Prior work experience in a secure environment within the criminal justice system.
  • Volunteer Management: Experience in recruiting and supervising volunteers.
Qualifications:
  • A recognized Level 3 qualification in one of the following fields:
    • Criminal justice
    • Information, advice and guidance
    • Counseling
    • Substance misuse and/or addictions
    • Mental health
    • Social care
    • Youth work
    • Childcare
This position is subject to:
  • A 6-month probationary period

  • Satisfactory references from previous employers covering a 3-year period
  • Declaration of any unspent criminal convictions (and where appropriate a satisfactory risk assessment)
  • Prison vetting and a Disclosure and Barring Service enhanced check
