Position Overview

The Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust is seeking skilled medical professionals to join our team as we enhance our critical care services. This role is ideal for experienced practitioners with a strong background in intensive care, dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care and managing intricate medical cases.

The successful candidate will play a vital role in augmenting our existing services by providing specialized knowledge and expertise in the field of intensive care medicine.

Our facility is equipped with 22 critical care beds distributed across three distinct areas, ensuring comprehensive care for our patients. The senior medical staff comprises intensive care trainees, anaesthesia trainees, and specialty doctors, while the junior tier includes clinical fellows, advanced clinical practitioners, and internal medicine trainees.

We are on the brink of expanding our critical care capabilities to facilitate the transfer of emergency and high-risk elective surgical services, as part of a broader initiative to enhance healthcare delivery in the region. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team and contribute to the development of a state-of-the-art intensive care unit.

This position is offered on a fixed-term basis, with the possibility of extension based on mutual agreement.

Key Responsibilities

The role will primarily involve working within the intensive care unit, where the post holder will:

  • Engage in activities aimed at improving the quality and safety of patient care and clinical outcomes.
  • Develop and implement appropriate diagnostic and management strategies, considering patient preferences.
  • Oversee the work of junior colleagues, providing guidance and support as needed.
  • Recognize the importance of addressing concerns through established clinical governance frameworks.

Essential Qualifications

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Primary medical qualification (e.g., MBChB).
  • A minimum of four years of full-time postgraduate training or equivalent experience, with at least two years in intensive care or anaesthesia with significant exposure to intensive care.
  • Progress towards or attainment of an MD or PhD or equivalent qualification.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Comprehensive clinical knowledge and training in accordance with the standards set by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine or the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
  • Proficiency in independently managing airways, including the difficult airway.
  • Active involvement in audit processes, demonstrating clear outcomes and relevant experience.
  • Research experience, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and contributions to the field.

Communication Skills

  • Empathetic and sensitive to the needs of patients.
  • Ability to convey complex or sensitive information clearly.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English, facilitating effective communication with patients and colleagues.
