Background

The sensor science and technology initiatives at STAR focus on research and development for satellite sensor payloads, ensuring data accuracy and preparing for upcoming instruments. This encompasses the creation of sophisticated mathematical models and algorithms that enhance the interpretation of satellite data, contributing to a deeper understanding of Earth's systems and their influence on weather and climate. STAR plays a crucial role in transitioning satellite technologies from research phases to practical applications, empowering users to make informed decisions based on reliable data. Furthermore, STAR conducts in situ observations for sensor calibration and product validation, integrating satellite measurements with ground data to support the development and maintenance of satellite instruments.

Position Overview
ERT, Inc. is looking for skilled professionals to contribute to the work at the Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR). Various positions are available, catering to different levels of education and experience. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading small teams of scientists and engineers to ensure successful project execution.
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to support the design and development of calibration tools and systems for the JPSS/GOES-R series and other Sensor Data Records (SDR).
  • Engaging with STAR SDR teams and international partners to enhance instrument and data product quality monitoring systems, including:
    • JPSS Satellite Instrument Calibration and Validation: Overseeing calibration and validation for instruments such as the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) and Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS).
    • Integrated Calibration and Validation System (ICVS): Monitoring instrument health and performance, detecting anomalies, and conducting root-cause analyses.
    • GOES Instrument Calibration and Validation: Supporting operational calibration and developing calibration tools.
    • Radio Occultation Calibration and Validation: Developing algorithms and validating atmospheric profiles.
    • Non-NOAA Sensor Calibration and Validation: Evaluating and integrating non-NOAA sensors to enhance satellite observations.
    • Risk Reduction: Promoting research to leverage next-generation satellite sensors for advanced algorithm development.
  • Integrating existing and developing codes relevant to instrument calibration and monitoring.
  • Performing software development and system administration to ensure the functionality of monitoring packages across various IT environments.
  • Identifying system goals, proposing alternative design concepts, and verifying that designs meet specified requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of 11 years of experience in applied science, software engineering, or programming in satellite-related applications (advanced degrees may substitute for experience).
  • Proven experience in instrument calibration and validation.
  • Proficiency in at least two programming languages on Unix/Linux platforms, such as FORTRAN, C/C++, Java, Python, IDL, or MatLab.
  • Familiarity with data formats like netCDF and HDF.
  • Recommended skills in software configuration and system administration.
  • Knowledge of radiative transfer and/or AI/Machine Learning is advantageous.

Candidates must successfully pass a background investigation to obtain necessary security clearances.

Educational Requirements
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in atmospheric science, physical science, computer science, or a related field is required. Positions are available at the BS, MS, and PhD levels.
