STAR plays a vital role in ensuring the quality and reliability of environmental satellite measurements. These measurements are essential for forecasting weather patterns, monitoring environmental conditions, and supporting numerous applications. STAR achieves this through rigorous calibration and validation processes, comparing satellite data with ground truth data and other independent sources.

About the Role: Principal Scientist - Satellite Data Expertise

We are looking for a highly skilled Principal Scientist to contribute to our team of experts working on cutting-edge satellite data analysis and processing. In this role, you will leverage your extensive experience in instrument calibration and validation, software engineering, and programming to ensure the accuracy and reliability of critical environmental datasets.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development and implementation of innovative techniques for instrument calibration and validation of Earth observation satellites.
  • Design, develop, and maintain software systems for monitoring and analyzing satellite data quality.
  • Collaborate with a team of scientists, engineers, and programmers to ensure seamless integration of data processing workflows.
  • Contribute to the development of scientific publications and reports based on your research findings.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in satellite remote sensing technologies and methodologies.
Qualifications:
  • 11+ years of experience in applied science, software engineering, and programming within the field of satellite applications (advanced degrees can offset required years of experience).
  • Proven expertise in instrument calibration and validation techniques for Earth observation satellites.
  • Proficiency in at least two of the following programming languages: FORTRAN, C/C++, Java, Python, IDL, MatLab, or similar.
  • Strong understanding of common data formats such as netCDF and HDF.
  • Experience with software configuration and system administration is highly desirable.
  • A background in radiative transfer and/or AI/Machine Learning is a significant asset.
Education:

At least a Bachelor's degree in atmospheric science, physical science, computer science, or a related discipline. Positions at the Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral levels will be available.
