Our focus at the Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) is to ensure the integrity and accuracy of satellite data, which is essential for effective weather forecasting and environmental assessments. Our rigorous processes for calibration and validation of satellite measurements are fundamental to maintaining high-quality data that meets the needs of various stakeholders.
Role Summary
We are looking for experienced professionals to contribute to our mission at STAR. The responsibilities associated with this role include:
- Leading interdisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers to achieve project objectives effectively.
- Collaborating with various teams to enhance system/software design and develop tools for calibration and data management, ensuring the lifecycle maintenance of satellite data records.
- Engaging with both domestic and international partners to refine and uphold the quality monitoring systems for satellite instruments and data products. Key areas of focus include:
- Calibration and Validation of JPSS Instruments: Overseeing the calibration processes for advanced satellite instruments, managing tasks, supporting operational activities, and enhancing data quality.
- Integrated Calibration and Validation System: Monitoring satellite instrument performance and conducting anomaly investigations.
- GOES Instrument Calibration: Supporting operational calibration and tool development for GOES satellites.
- Radio Occultation Program: Developing algorithms and validating atmospheric data.
- Non-NOAA Sensor Integration: Evaluating and incorporating external sensor data to complement NOAA observations.
- Radiative Transfer Model Development: Contributing to the advancement of models essential for data analysis.
- Risk Mitigation: Engaging in applied research to enhance satellite sensor capabilities and data integration.
- Integrating and refining existing codebases related to calibration and monitoring.
- Performing software development and system administration to ensure operational efficiency of monitoring packages.
- Assessing system design goals and recommending improvements to enhance performance and integration.
Qualifications
Candidates should possess:
- A minimum of 11 years of experience in applied science or software engineering within satellite applications (advanced degrees may substitute for experience).
- Proven expertise in instrument calibration and validation.
- Proficiency in at least two programming languages such as FORTRAN, C/C++, Java, Python, IDL, or MATLAB on Unix/Linux platforms.
- Familiarity with data formats like netCDF and HDF.
- Skills in software configuration and system administration.
- Knowledge of radiative transfer principles and AI/Machine Learning is advantageous.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in atmospheric science, physical science, computer science, or a related field is required. Opportunities are available for candidates with BS, MS, and PhD qualifications.
