Overview:

This role presents a unique opportunity to influence the future direction of Network Rail as we embark on a new strategic planning phase. Are you a finance expert with a background in financial reporting and systems, or are you considering transitioning into this area?

Key Responsibilities:

As an integral member of our strategic finance team and a versatile analyst group, you will collaborate closely with the broader finance department and various internal and external stakeholders. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Compiling financial reports from diverse sectors of our organization, fostering ongoing enhancement and best practices in their creation.
  • Evaluating and interpreting financial performance in relation to our strategic goals, identifying potential inefficiencies and opportunities for cost savings, as well as recognizing risks and prospects.
  • Assisting in a comprehensive analysis program to pinpoint areas for financial, procedural, and performance enhancements that will aid in the formulation of our long-term strategic initiatives.
  • Playing a supportive role in the advancement and refinement of our financial reporting and analytical systems, processes, and tools.
  • Being part of a dynamic analyst team, delivering high-priority analytical support to the organization.
  • Engaging with stakeholders across the rail sector to generate and enhance financial reporting and insightful analysis.
  • Serving as the subject matter expert on financial systems and providing guidance on enhancements to reporting methodologies.
  • Developing and sustaining financial reporting solutions while optimizing systems and procedures utilized in financial analysis and decision-making to ensure they are efficient and minimize manual intervention.
  • Delivering urgent ad hoc reports and analytical assistance as needed.

Qualifications and Skills:

To excel in this position, you should possess:

  • A robust understanding of business requirements and the relevant application of accounting principles.
  • Membership (or progress towards membership) in a recognized accounting body (CIMA/ACCA).
  • Expertise in creating and managing accounts and annual budgets.
  • Extensive experience in pertinent finance sectors.
  • Proficient Excel skills and experience in data manipulation.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • The capability to translate complex accounting regulations into accessible language.
  • Proven influencing skills at a senior level.
  • A comprehensive understanding of financial control and risk management.
  • Excellent technical knowledge in finance and accounting.

Desirable Attributes:

While not mandatory, the following would be advantageous:

  • Familiarity with project management principles and experience in managing intricate projects.
  • Membership in a relevant accounting body.
  • Extensive experience with Oracle-based systems.
  • A degree or equivalent qualification in finance, accounting, or business management, or relevant experience.
