Opportunity for a Senior Financial Operations Manager

We are in search of a highly qualified and motivated Financial Operations Manager to oversee a vital financial portfolio and lead a committed team. This significant position entails managing the financial operations of NIHR's extensive research funding initiatives.

In this role, you will be responsible for the financial management of a diverse array of NIHR/DHSC awards, while also handling key projects for our distinguished clients. You will lead a multifaceted team of 10, including 3 direct reports, ensuring seamless daily operations. Your responsibilities will include managing the GMG's budget and providing essential support for business development efforts. Additionally, you will drive performance by establishing and monitoring key performance indicators.

Main Responsibilities

Comprehensive Financial Oversight for Research Portfolios

  • Ensure the quality, accuracy, and timely completion of quarterly financial reports and forecasts for research budgets.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to understand financial reporting needs and develop effective reporting structures.
  • Establish systems for issuing contracts and managing contract variations.
  • Implement operational improvements to enhance the finance function continually.
  • Ensure robust systems are in place to evaluate cost information in research funding applications for optimal value.
  • Lead finance initiatives of strategic significance to stakeholders.
  • Supervise the finance and contracts team to adhere to best practices.
  • Provide management with access to relevant and accurate financial information.

Management of the GMG Budget

In this capacity, you will assist the Assistant Director in managing the budget (£19m PA) in accordance with the requirements of the LGC Divisional and Group Finance teams:

  • Work with the LGC Divisional Finance team to produce an accurate monthly P&L for GMG, addressing any accounting issues as necessary.
  • Contribute to the Divisional reporting pack, including providing monthly performance commentary against the budget.
  • Ensure timely and accurate invoicing for customers.
  • Prepare an annual budget and quarterly forecasts for GMG.
  • Monitor and report on variances and trends, advising leadership accordingly.
  • Provide financial support for securing new business, including developing cost and pricing models.
  • Ensure management has access to relevant and accurate financial information.

Cost Modelling

  • Collaborate with the business to identify key cost drivers.
  • Develop a cost model to estimate expenses for new and existing business areas.
  • Continuously assess the model and suggest necessary adjustments.
  • Support the business in utilizing the cost model effectively.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA) with substantial post-qualification experience.
  • Experience managing research finances within an NHS and/or HEI environment.
  • Strong technical financial accounting skills.
  • Prior experience with divisional reporting requirements.
  • Proven ability to build strong relationships with operational teams.
  • Experience in systems implementation is advantageous.
  • Expertise in developing and leading robust financial processes.
  • Proficient in financial modelling and forecasting.
  • Ability to mentor, develop, and empower team members.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to establish credibility with key stakeholders.
  • Analytical mindset with the capability to challenge data and assumptions.
  • Experienced in leading organizational initiatives and serving as a subject matter expert.
