Opportunity for a Senior Financial Operations Manager

Are you prepared to oversee a dynamic financial portfolio and guide a committed team towards success? This critical position involves managing the financial operations of NIHR, where you will play an essential role in coordinating the financial oversight of NIHR's extensive research funding portfolio.

In this capacity, you will lead the financial management of a diverse array of NIHR/DHSC awards, in addition to key projects for our valued clients. You will supervise a diverse team of 10, including 3 direct reports, ensuring efficient daily operations. Your responsibilities will include managing the GMG's budget and providing vital support for business development initiatives. You will drive success by establishing and monitoring key performance indicators.

Main Responsibilities

Financial Oversight for a Comprehensive Research Portfolio

  • Accountability for the quality, accuracy, and timely completion of quarterly financial reports and forecasts for research budgets.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to understand financial reporting and monitoring requirements, and developing appropriate reporting structures and processes.
  • Ensuring robust systems are in place for issuing contracts and amendments.
  • Implementing operational improvements to continually enhance the finance function.
  • Ensuring effective systems are established to review cost information provided in research funding applications, guaranteeing optimal value for money.
  • Leading finance initiatives of strategic significance to stakeholders.
  • Supervising the finance and contracts team to adhere to best practices.
  • Ensuring management has access to relevant and accurate financial information.

Financial Management of the GMG Budget

In this role, you will assist the Assistant Director in managing the budget (£19m PA) in accordance with the requirements of the LGC Divisional and Group Finance teams:

  • Collaborating with the LGC Divisional Finance team to produce an accurate monthly P&L for GMG, addressing accounting issues as necessary.
  • Contributing to the Divisional reporting pack, including providing monthly commentary on performance against budget.
  • Ensuring timely and accurate invoicing for customers.
  • Preparing an annual budget and quarterly forecasts for GMG.
  • Monitoring and reporting on variances and trends, advising leadership accordingly.
  • Providing financial support for securing new business, including developing cost and pricing models.
  • Ensuring management has access to relevant and accurate financial information.

Cost Modelling

  • Collaborating with the business to identify cost drivers.
  • Developing a cost model to estimate expenses for new and existing business areas.
  • Continuously evaluating the model and proposing necessary adjustments.
  • Supporting the business in utilizing the model effectively.

Qualifications & Experience

Required Criteria

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA) with substantial post-qualification experience.
  • Experience in managing research finances within an NHS and/or HEI environment.
  • Strong technical application of financial accounting skills.
  • Prior experience with divisional reporting requirements.
  • Proven ability to build strong working relationships with operational teams.
  • Experience in systems implementation is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and lead robust financial processes.
  • Expertise in financial modelling and forecasting.
  • Ability to mentor, develop, and empower team members.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to establish credibility with key stakeholders.
  • Analytical mindset with the capability to challenge financial data and assumptions.
  • Comfortable taking on a leadership role and serving as a subject matter expert.

Salary & Benefits

£56,400 to £59,500 PA (higher for exceptional candidates)
