About the Role

The Publishing Performance and Intelligence Group (PP&I) aims to advance digital publishing at Springer Nature, particularly increasing the volume of published articles in open access (OA). Collaborating closely with various departments, including Journals, Production, IT, Marketing, and Customer Service, PP&I is dedicated to enhancing the journal publishing process through strategic initiatives.

The Centre of Excellence (CoE) team within PP&I is responsible for fostering continuous improvement across PP&I and Journal Publishing teams, working with stakeholders to achieve strategic objectives. We undertake numerous tactical and strategic projects aimed at delivering specific business outcomes, utilizing best practices in Project Management, Business Analysis, Continuous Improvement, and Change Management.

As a member of the CoE team, the Process Excellence Manager will play a crucial role in executing projects within the Research Publishing Business Unit, focusing on enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in workflow-related areas. This position involves collaborating with key stakeholders across various departments to align, plan, and implement improvements in the end-to-end publishing process. You will be responsible for keeping all stakeholders updated on project developments and coordinating engagement as necessary.

The Process Excellence Manager will develop a comprehensive understanding of a specific publishing domain, positioning themselves as a trusted partner and providing support and consulting for initiatives aligned with strategic priorities. This role encompasses ownership and management of a selection of projects within the publishing area.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Comprehend the strategic objectives of the assigned business area and contribute to achieving them by coordinating the project portfolio.
  • Investigate business needs that require attention, map relevant processes, identify inefficiencies, and propose improvement opportunities.
  • Gather and validate publishing requirements from internal stakeholders, ensuring alignment with business strategy.
  • Perform tasks such as documentation, data analysis, and workflow automation to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Collaborate with technology teams to support the delivery of technological solutions.
  • Coordinate project execution with relevant stakeholders for tactical initiatives.
  • Contribute to business case documentation, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
  • Engage with technology partners during software selection to ensure business requirements are met.
  • Identify and communicate risks and issues to project management teams.
  • Foster collaboration with editorial, marketing, and production teams to adopt new workflows.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders across internal divisions.
  • Participate in change management planning and execution to ensure successful adoption of new processes.
  • Measure project success through key performance indicators (KPIs) and data analysis.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for initiatives, effectively communicating objectives to the wider business.
  • Support the management of the demand pipeline and contribute to project status tracking.
  • Promote teamwork and cross-collaboration within the CoE.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of the research publishing landscape and the role of journals.
  • Familiarity with core brand values across the Research Publishing business.
  • Experience in process optimization, continuous improvement, or business analysis.
  • Knowledge of workflows in the submission-to-publication journey.
  • Proven project and program management experience with strategic impact.
  • Experience in transitioning new technologies and workflows in a commercial setting.
  • Negotiation skills and ability to integrate customer and operational requirements.
  • Understanding of change management concepts.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to articulate complex concepts clearly.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Familiarity with corporate IT infrastructure.
  • Yellow-belt Lean certification or Business Analysis certification is essential.
  • Degree: minimum of BSc level or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
  • Project Management certification is desirable.
  • Business Relationship Management certification is desirable.
