Job Title: Process Excellence Manager - Publishing

Location(s): Hybrid Working Model

About the Role

The Publishing Performance and Intelligence Group (PP&I) is focused on advancing digital publishing at Springer Nature, with a particular emphasis on increasing the volume of published articles, especially in open access formats. Collaborating closely with various departments, including Journals, Production, IT, Marketing, and Customer Service, PP&I plays a vital role in enhancing the journal publishing process.

The Centre of Excellence (CoE) team within PP&I is responsible for fostering continuous improvement across PP&I and Journal Publishing teams, working with stakeholders to achieve strategic objectives. This involves initiating and managing multiple tactical and strategic projects aimed at delivering specific business outcomes. Our team comprises professionals skilled in Project Management, Business Analysis, Continuous Improvement, and Change Management.

As a member of the CoE team, the Process Excellence Manager will facilitate the execution of projects within the Research Publishing Business Unit, focusing on enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in workflow-related aspects. This role requires collaboration with key stakeholders across various departments to align objectives, plan initiatives, and drive improvements in the publishing process.

The Process Excellence Manager will develop a comprehensive understanding of a designated publishing area, becoming a trusted partner by providing support and consulting on initiatives that align with strategic priorities. The role encompasses ownership and management of a portfolio of projects related to the publishing area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Comprehend the strategic objectives of the assigned business area and contribute to initiatives aimed at achieving them. Serve as the CoE point of contact for the designated publishing area.
  • Investigate business needs that cannot be resolved internally, mapping processes and data to identify inefficiencies and improvement opportunities, ultimately contributing to the implementation of solutions.
  • Gather and validate publishing requirements from internal stakeholders, translating them into coherent functional and non-functional requirements that align with business strategy.
  • Perform specific tasks such as documentation updates, data analysis, and workflow automation improvements.
  • Collaborate with Technology teams and external partners to support the delivery of technological solutions, including user stories and testing.
  • Coordinate project execution with relevant stakeholders for tactical initiatives.
  • Contribute to business case documentation, ensuring alignment with business strategies throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Engage with technology partners during software selection processes to ensure business requirements are met.
  • Identify and communicate risks and issues to project management teams, actively participating in their mitigation.
  • Facilitate the adoption of new workflows and processes across editorial, marketing, and production teams.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders in internal divisions that develop and control essential processes and systems.
  • Contribute to change management planning and execution, advocating for robust change management practices.
  • Measure project success by establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) and ensuring alignment with business objectives.
  • Act as a spokesperson for initiatives, effectively communicating goals to the wider business.
  • Support the management of the demand pipeline and contribute to project status tracking for CoE activities.
  • Promote teamwork and cross-collaboration within the CoE.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of the research publishing landscape and the role of journals in serving the research community.
  • Familiarity with core brand values of Springer Nature and other key brands in the Research Publishing sector.
  • Experience in process optimization, continuous improvement, or business analysis.
  • Knowledge of workflows underpinning the submission-to-publication journey.
  • Proven track record in project and program management with strategic impact.
  • Experience in transitioning new technologies and workflows in a commercial context.
  • Skills in negotiation and integrating customer and operational requirements.
  • Familiarity with change management concepts and techniques.
  • A proactive approach to improving processes and workflows.
  • Highly analytical with the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication with diverse stakeholders.
  • Excellent time-management and organizational abilities.
  • Knowledge of corporate IT infrastructure and system architecture.
  • Yellow-belt Lean certification or Business Analysis certification is essential.
  • Degree: minimum of BSc level or higher in a relevant field or significant experience in a similar role.
  • Project Management certification (e.g., PRINCE 2, MSP, Scrum) is desirable.
