Role Overview

The primary responsibility of this position is to fit, operate, and maintain on-track machines (OTM) safely and in accordance with established competency standards. Comprehensive training will be provided to the successful candidate.

This role is ideal for individuals with an engineering background—whether electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or a combination thereof—who are eager to advance their careers in the rail industry. All necessary rail-specific training will be offered. A company vehicle and fuel card will be provided. Candidates should possess a keen attention to detail, the ability to work independently or collaboratively, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Overnight lodging may be required. Key Responsibilities
  • Check in and out at designated times as instructed by the duty manager or senior production manager.
  • Wear provided personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Maintain clear communication, both verbal and written, with the Rail Plant Control Room and Help Desk.
  • Adhere to safety and competency standards in all tasks.
  • Absorb and retain knowledge gained through training.
  • Execute emergency procedures as necessary.

OTM Operations

  • Receive comprehensive training on the operation of OTMs.
  • Be responsible for identifying and, if possible, rectifying service faults and failures.
  • Report all service faults and failures promptly, both verbally and in writing, to the Rail Plant Control Desk.
  • Operate on-track machines in compliance with railway standards.
  • Conduct maintenance and safety checks and assist specialist fitters during machine breakdowns.

Fitting Responsibilities

  • Support specialist fitters in all maintenance tasks.
  • Promptly report machine faults and failures to the Rugby Rail Plant Control Desk.
  • Complete all maintenance duties as outlined in the Maintenance Fitter Assessment Scheme.
Candidate Profile
  • Proficient in computer and phone skills, including Windows, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Exhibit flexibility, honesty, and punctuality.
  • Hold a certification in Vehicle, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Possess strong communication skills.
  • Have a clean, valid driving license for company vehicle operation.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn and undergo training.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and professional pride.
  • Able to work weekends and night shifts as required.
  • Mechanically inclined and a team player.
