For over three decades, we have been at the forefront of developing and publishing exceptional video games from our various studios, established by Jason & Chris Kingsley. However, Rebellion extends beyond gaming; we also have our own film and motion capture studio, produce board games, publish literature, and through 2000AD, we release comics and graphic novels, including the iconic Judge Dredd.

We operate from multiple locations across the UK and offer a hybrid work model for this role. We prioritize work-life balance and are open to discussing how we can adapt to your working preferences, providing flexibility in both hours and onsite attendance.

We are on the lookout for a driven and skilled Lead Animation Engineer to become part of our creative team. Collaborating with our supportive and experienced animation professionals, you will contribute to a range of thrilling projects. This includes Project Archipelago, an exhilarating battle royale game, as well as the chance to engage with unannounced projects, such as a dark sci-fi shooter and more. Additionally, our exciting new original IP, Atomfall, is scheduled for release in the near future.

The ideal candidate will assist our animation team, generating content and guiding team members on exciting unannounced projects. Our dynamic and rapidly expanding art team seeks a passionate individual to foster team development and make a significant impact on our games.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain comprehensive documentation on tools, methodologies, training, and processes throughout the animation pipeline.
  • Provide insightful input during the character creation phase, from initial concepts to final rigging, while identifying performance and functionality requirements.
  • Investigate new technologies and innovations to enhance animation efficiency.
  • Communicate effectively with code, design, art, and animation teams to deliver both performant and engaging gaming experiences.
  • Assess the quality of work and implement improvements as necessary to align with technical constraints and artistic vision.
  • Act as a mentor and role model for your team, fostering morale and cultivating an atmosphere of creativity and enthusiasm.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of anatomy and body mechanics.
  • Proficient in 3D software such as Maya, Motion Builder, and/or Blender, with a focus on rigging and skinning.
  • Experience in creating body, facial, and prop rigs.
  • Solid knowledge of motion capture techniques.
  • Familiarity with scripting tools using MEL and Python.
  • Good understanding of production pipelines.
  • Advanced knowledge of the video game development lifecycle.
  • Understanding of 3D mathematics (linear algebra, vectors, and matrices).
  • Experience in creating UI tools with Maya commands or QT/Pyside is advantageous.
  • Ability to develop tools using Python is a plus.
  • Experience with the Maya node editor and creating complex systems is beneficial.
  • Capability to create corrective joints and drive them, particularly with vectors, is a significant advantage.
