Position Overview

The University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated Orthopaedic Trainee at the CT/ST 1/2 level for a comprehensive training opportunity in Trauma and Orthopaedics.

Our Trauma and Orthopaedics Unit is equipped with advanced laminar flow theatres and specialized outpatient facilities catering to both trauma and elective cases. As one of the leading Orthopaedic Departments in the UK, we provide a full range of surgical interventions across various sub-specialties, including foot and ankle, lower limb, upper limb, and spinal surgery. Trainees will gain exposure to all aspects of these specialties during their tenure.

This role offers extensive educational support, including a designated Educational Supervisor, funded study leave, and access to relevant training courses. Additionally, funding of up to £5,000 per year is available to support ongoing orthopaedic education and qualifications. A robust in-house educational program is also provided weekly.

The Orthopaedic Trainee will play a vital role in the daily management of trauma and orthopaedic patients under their care, with regular commitments to clinics and surgical sessions.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
  • Valid GMC registration with a license to practice at the time of application.
  • A minimum of 6 months experience in a UK healthcare setting.

Desirable

  • Completion of a Basic Surgical Skills course.
  • Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS).
  • Completion of an Advanced Life Support course.

Experience

Essential

  • Two years of Foundation training or equivalent.
  • At least 4 months of previous experience in NHS Trauma & Orthopaedics.

Desirable

  • Previous participation in a CT grade surgical training program.
  • Evidence of teaching involvement with undergraduate students and Foundation Year 1 doctors within 4 years of qualification.

  • Recent participation in audit projects.
  • Recent involvement in research initiatives.
