Position Overview

The selected candidate will join a collaborative team comprising head and neck surgeons, orthodontic specialists, and various allied health professionals. This role provides a unique opportunity to enhance expertise in head and neck surgical procedures, including extensive resections and reconstructions, transoral robotic techniques, laser interventions, and salivary gland surgeries, among other facets of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Essential Qualifications

Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a valid license to practice are mandatory at the time of application.

Key Responsibilities

The fellow will collaborate closely with specialist trainees in oral and maxillofacial surgery and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) disciplines, as well as dental core trainees.

Additionally, the fellow will participate in a secondary on-call capacity, which can be customized to meet the educational needs of the fellow, including cross-specialty exposure if necessary.

As a Head and Neck fellow, responsibilities will include attending specialized clinics, evaluating patients, presenting cases at multidisciplinary team meetings, and engaging in the comprehensive management of head and neck patients.

Job Duties

The Maxillofacial Fellow will engage in both general and specialized clinics, perform minor surgical procedures under local anesthesia, and assist consultants in major head and neck, orthognathic, and temporomandibular joint surgeries.

This position is designed to provide a well-supervised environment conducive to learning and skill development, despite not being a formally recognized training post.

The fellow will also participate in the oral and maxillofacial on-call rota.

Candidate Profile

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent qualification.
  • Full registration with the GMC and GDC.
  • Full Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS).

Desirable

  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification.

Experience

Essential

  • A minimum of four years of training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in a Specialist/Specialty Registrar role or equivalent.
  • Prior experience in Head and Neck Oncology or Orofacial Deformity and Temporomandibular Joint disorders.

Research and Academic Contributions

Essential

  • Demonstrated involvement in research, including publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at regional or national conferences.
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and risk management activities.

Teaching and Mentorship

Essential

  • Proven experience in contributing to the education and training of peers and junior staff.
