Position Overview

The Respiratory Support Technician role is integral to our expanding team dedicated to sleep and pulmonary function services. This position may require flexibility to operate across various locations.

The primary responsibilities will involve outpatient consultations within our newly established community diagnostic facilities, although there may be occasions for inpatient assessments during your scheduled shifts.

You will have the chance to enhance your skills and receive training while participating in both sleep and pulmonary function assessments as part of a collaborative team environment.

This role primarily involves direct interaction with patients, alongside responsibilities such as inventory management, data entry, and equipment sanitation.

Key Responsibilities

To assist in the delivery and execution of fundamental pulmonary function assessments and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) services for patients.

To manage the preparation, downloading, and distribution of diagnostic sleep study apparatus to patients.

To ensure that sleep diagnostic evaluations are conducted with high quality and that all necessary channel markers are available for analysis.

To provide prompt responses to inquiries regarding CPAP equipment replacement and maintenance from patients, whether via phone or in-person visits.

To accurately document and measure patient observations.

To aid in the procurement, stock management, maintenance, reprocessing, and disposal of medical equipment utilized by the sleep and pulmonary function service.

To diligently update sleep databases and departmental records.

To communicate effectively with colleagues and alert senior staff to any issues.

To deliver quality-assured diagnostic spirometry testing in accordance with established national standards.

Services you may engage with include home sleep study evaluations, overnight pulse oximetry, spirometry, FeNO testing, earlobe capillary blood gas assessments, and CPAP therapy.

Willingness to work across multiple locations as needed.

Job Duties

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Serve as the initial point of contact for patients, families, and caregivers arriving for appointments with the Sleep and Lung Function Services, maintaining a professional and composed demeanor in alignment with our Trust's values.
  2. Assist with inquiries related to the Sleep and Lung Function service, including CPAP parts and checks, utilizing the CPAP database, and issuing CPAP accessories as necessary, while escalating issues to the appropriate healthcare professionals.
  3. Support CPAP and Oximeter clinics by conducting patient observations, downloading CPAP data cards, and providing pulse oximeters to assist physiologists in evaluating therapy effectiveness.
  4. Manage the setup and instruction for home screening assessments, including multi-channel sleep studies and overnight oximetry evaluations.
  5. Oversee the setup and instruction for inpatient screening assessments, including multi-channel sleep studies and overnight oximetry evaluations.
  6. Download data from home screening studies and prepare all necessary equipment for subsequent patient use.
  7. Identify and report any discrepancies in downloaded sleep study data to the physiologists.
  8. Maintain, clean, and calibrate all sleep analysis equipment, preparing it for disinfection in accordance with Trust policies.
  9. Complete requisitions and identify faulty equipment that requires repair or replacement.
  10. Unpack deliveries and verify against orders and asset registers.
  11. Communicate all relevant information and messages to patients in a professional and sensitive manner.
  12. Perform photocopying, filing, and record-keeping as necessary.
  13. Ensure that patient records are kept up to date and organized, in compliance with Trust policies.
  14. Work flexibly to meet service needs, including across multiple sites, weekends, and bank holidays as required.
  15. Adapt to new procedures that may be implemented in the future within your competencies.
  16. Support the development of junior staff members.
  17. Represent the Sleep and Lung Function Services in interdepartmental projects and groups as needed.
  18. Undertake any other relevant duties as required to meet service needs.

Education, Training, and Development

Demonstrate a willingness to advance your skills by training to perform quality-assured diagnostic Spirometry, FeNO tests, and earlobe capillary blood gas assessments in outpatient clinics and on wards.

Ensure compliance with personal mandatory training requirements.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE level Maths and English (or equivalent).

Desirable

  • ARTP Spirometry Certification.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • Prior experience in a healthcare environment.

Desirable

  • Experience in conducting home sleep studies.
  • Experience in performing spirometry tests.
  • Experience in measuring and documenting patient observations.
  • Experience in inventory management.

Skills and Competencies

Essential

  • Basic computer data entry skills.

Desirable

  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with Excel databases.
