Position Overview
The Clinical Respiratory Specialist role is an integral part of our expanding team dedicated to sleep and pulmonary function services. This position may involve working across various locations.
The primary focus will be on outpatient clinics within our newly established community diagnostic facilities, although there may be opportunities for inpatient assessments during your scheduled shifts.
As part of a collaborative team, you will have the chance to enhance your skills and participate in both sleep and pulmonary function assessments.
This position is also open to individuals with a relevant scientific background who are eager to pursue a career within the NHS. Candidates will be expected to complete a postgraduate diploma in sleep and pulmonary function, leading to successful registration with the appropriate regulatory body.
Key Responsibilities
The role involves supporting the delivery of a comprehensive lung function assessment and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) service for patients.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Providing training and guidance to staff.
- Offering expert advice on technical respiratory procedures and CPAP services and equipment.
- Conducting a range of services including Full Lung Function Testing, Mannitol Challenge Testing, Hypoxic Challenge Testing, and more.
- Participating in the development of new services such as Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPEX) and Domiciliary Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV).
- Exhibiting flexibility to work across multiple locations as needed.

Job Duties
Core Responsibilities
- Ensure the calibration of equipment and maintain quality control of measurements.
- Obtain precise and clinically relevant measurements of lung function at rest and during exercise.
- Adapt to new procedures as they are introduced within your competencies.
- Manage urgent patient testing efficiently and prioritize tasks appropriately.
- Document workload data and assist with service audits.
- Conduct and report routine and specialized tests as necessary.
- Collaborate with colleagues on the therapeutic aspects of the OSA service.
- Represent the Sleep and Lung Function Services in interdepartmental projects.
- Provide coherent guidance to team members and other departments as required.
- Complete training to report overnight pulse oximetry results.
- Facilitate CPAP setup and follow-up reviews.
- Contribute to service improvement initiatives and documentation reviews.
- Complete the HCS practitioner program and obtain necessary registrations.
Clinical Responsibilities
- Lead and instruct patients in lung function techniques, ensuring maximum effort for accurate results.
- Measure static lung volumes and dynamic lung volumes using appropriate methods.
- Assess bronchodilator response and conduct gas exchange studies.
- Investigate respiratory muscle function and measure exercise limitations.
- Conduct bronchial challenge assessments and hypoxic challenge tests.
- Perform overnight pulse oximetry assessments as required.
- Investigate sleep-disordered breathing through various studies.
- Initiate CPAP therapy for suitable patients under physician guidance.
- Provide ongoing clinical support for patients on CPAP therapy.
Education and Professional Development
- Act as a role model for best practices at all times.
- Assist senior staff in developing training programs for clinical physiologists and other healthcare professionals.
- Foster a positive learning environment.
- Provide training in lung function techniques to nursing and medical staff.
- Stay informed about current research and issues in the field.
- Identify and pursue relevant courses for personal and professional development.
- Complete a postgraduate diploma in sleep and lung function if not already obtained.
- Achieve ARTP level III qualification and become registered with the appropriate body if not already done.
Qualifications
Essential
- BSc Degree in Clinical Physiology or equivalent.
- Other relevant science degrees may be considered with additional training.
Desirable
- ARTP level III qualification.
- ARTP certificate in spirometry.
Knowledge and Experience
Desirable
- Experience in performing respiratory physiological measurements.
- Background in a healthcare setting.
Skills and Knowledge
Essential
- Understanding of respiratory anatomy and physiology.
