Position Overview

This fellowship opportunity is designed for candidates with substantial experience in laparoscopic colorectal procedures. The focus will be on the sophisticated surgical treatment of colorectal diseases, including cancer, diverticular disease, and inflammatory bowel conditions, with a particular emphasis on managing low rectal cancer. This role is ideal for senior trainees aspiring to specialize in advanced gastrointestinal laparoscopy.

Main Responsibilities

The selected fellow will engage in four operating theatre sessions weekly, alongside 1-2 outpatient clinic sessions and one endoscopy session. Additionally, there will be a session dedicated to multidisciplinary team meetings, morbidity and mortality reviews, and departmental discussions, as well as a research session. The fellow will oversee the inpatient care of elective surgical patients under the guidance of colorectal consultants, primarily focusing on colorectal resections, expected to perform at a peri-CCT/CESR surgeon level. Participation in an on-call rota will be required, involving weekday and weekend duties on a 1 in 8 basis. The fellow will operate at a registrar level within a consultant-led service, without ongoing responsibilities for emergency surgical patients outside designated hours.

Detailed Job Description and Responsibilities

The fellow will provide care for general and colorectal surgical patients at a level comparable to that of a newly appointed consultant colorectal surgeon. This position serves as a transitional phase for refining surgical skills and preparing for future consultant roles.

Experience/Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Medical degree
  • Postgraduate or specialist qualification
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice
  • Experience in laparoscopic colorectal surgery
  • Advanced Life Support Certification from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent

  • Higher Degree

  • Competency in left and right-sided laparoscopic resections (20+ cases each)
