Position Overview

We are excited to announce an opportunity for two Senior Advanced Clinical Practitioners to join our Gastrointestinal (GI) Faster Diagnosis team. The successful candidates will play a crucial role in the clinical triage and assessment of GI patients referred through the two-week suspected cancer pathway. This position involves leading and facilitating improvements in the pathway to enhance clinical triage and optimize the faster diagnosis processes in accordance with the Faster Diagnosis Framework and Best Practice Timed Pathway guidelines.

Objectives of the Faster Diagnostic Framework

  • To provide patients with earlier and expedited diagnoses, regardless of whether cancer is confirmed.
  • To ensure an exceptional patient experience through a comprehensive assessment of needs and seamless support across community, primary, and secondary care.
  • To increase system capacity by streamlining diagnostic pathways.
  • To assist healthcare providers in achieving the Faster Diagnosis Standard.

Our department operates in a dynamic environment with diverse demands and priorities. It is essential that candidates are adaptable and capable of responding to evolving challenges while managing competing responsibilities autonomously.

The roles will involve collaboration within multidisciplinary teams. Trainee roles will receive guidance while pursuing the necessary academic studies and training to transition into the role.

Main Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be required to operate autonomously at the ACP level, closely collaborating with our colorectal nurse consultant and the broader cancer services team to deliver the highest standard of patient support.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Utilizing advanced clinical expertise and judgment in assessing, planning, and evaluating patient care.
  • Effectively communicating with patients and their families to assess needs and provide relevant support, information, education, and counseling.
  • Ensuring all patients receive comprehensive written and verbal information.
  • Participating in relevant network meetings.
  • Collaborating with and referring to other allied health professionals and medical colleagues as necessary.
  • Requesting appropriate investigations, such as CT scans and blood tests, and acting on results accordingly.
  • Initiating admissions to secondary care when appropriate.
  • Providing primary support for junior nurses involved in the consultant-led, nurse-delivered faster diagnosis pathway.
  • Offering expert opinions to colleagues and patients in both secondary and primary care settings.
  • Conducting nurse-led physical and virtual clinics, including taking comprehensive medical histories and performing clinical examinations.
  • Actively participating in relevant specialist nurse forums at Trust, Network, and national levels.
  • Coordinating effectively with consultants and other team members to ensure a cohesive specialist service.

Essential Qualifications

  • MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Completion of an advanced physical assessment course.
  • Completion of a prescribing course.
  • Completion of an advanced communication skills course.
  • Evidence of championing diversity in previous roles.
  • Commitment to personal development regarding equality issues.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Level 2 psychological therapies certification.
  • Teaching qualification.
