Position Overview

This role is designed for a laparoscopic peri CCT/CESR fellowship aimed at candidates with prior experience in various laparoscopic colorectal resections. The fellowship will concentrate on the sophisticated surgical treatment of colorectal disorders, including malignancies, diverticular issues, and inflammatory bowel diseases, with a particular focus on managing low rectal cancer. This position is particularly suitable for senior trainees aspiring to specialize in advanced gastrointestinal laparoscopy.

Main Responsibilities

The selected fellow will engage in four operating theatre sessions weekly, complemented by 1-2 outpatient clinic sessions and one endoscopy session. Additionally, there will be one session dedicated to multidisciplinary team meetings, morbidity and mortality reviews, and departmental discussions, alongside one research session. The fellow will oversee the inpatient care of elective surgical patients under the guidance of colorectal consultants, primarily focusing on colorectal resections, and is expected to operate at a peri-CCT/CESR surgeon level. Participation in an on-call rota will be required, involving out-of-hours duties on a 1 in 8 basis for weekdays, Fridays, and weekends. The fellow will not be responsible for the ongoing care of emergency surgical patients outside of these hours and will operate at a registrar level within a consultant-led service.

Detailed Job Responsibilities

The fellow will provide care for general and colorectal surgical patients at a level commensurate with that of a newly appointed consultant colorectal surgeon. This fellowship is viewed as a transitional phase for refining surgical skills and preparing for future applications to substantive consultant positions.

Candidate Requirements

Experience and Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Basic medical degree
  • Postgraduate qualification or relevant specialist certification
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice
  • Experience in laparoscopic colorectal surgery
  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent

  • Competency in left and right-sided laparoscopic resections (20+ cases each)
