Genetic Research Associate in Vector Control

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Imperial College London Full time

Position Overview: We are looking for a dedicated Research Associate to contribute to a pioneering research team focused on molecular biology and insect vector management. This role is situated within a prestigious academic institution.

Research Focus: Our investigations utilize advanced molecular biology and genetic techniques to comprehend and ultimately mitigate the mosquito vectors responsible for malaria transmission. The primary objective is to enhance vector control methodologies, particularly through gene drive systems aimed at significantly decreasing the population of Anopheles mosquitoes, the primary malaria carriers. Our innovative technologies are categorized under population suppression strategies that specifically target the reproductive capabilities of mosquito populations, including inducing sterility in female mosquitoes and favoring male offspring.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take initiative in planning and executing innovative and independent research as part of a collaborative team.
  • Engage with the Target Malaria research consortium to develop, construct, and evaluate cutting-edge genetic strategies.
  • Collaborate with other scientists within the institution and beyond, as necessary.
  • Participate in relevant workshops and conferences, contributing to the preparation of reports for research sponsors.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to fellow staff and students.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD in molecular biology or a closely related field, or nearing completion, with practical research experience and a publication record in reputable journals.
  • Hands-on experience with molecular cloning techniques (e.g., Gibson Assembly, Golden Gate) and mosquito husbandry, along with the ability to analyze and interpret DNA and RNA sequencing data.
  • Essential experience in molecular strategies for controlling mosquito disease vectors, with a solid understanding of molecular biology, genetics, statistical methods, and CRISPR-Cas9 systems.
  • Familiarity with data science and programming, including R and modeling software, is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to develop and implement new concepts and a creative approach to problem-solving.
  • A strong passion and determination to address and resolve scientific challenges.

Work Environment: This is a full-time, fixed-term position with the possibility of extension subject to funding. A hybrid working arrangement may be negotiated with the line manager.

Salary: The starting salary will be determined based on experience, with initial appointments typically made at the lower end of the scale.

Ethical Commitment: The institution is committed to the ethical use of animals in research, ensuring that their use is justified for the advancement of human and animal health and welfare.
