Genetic Research Associate in Vector Control

Position Overview: We are looking for a Research Associate to contribute to a prestigious research team focused on molecular biology and the management of insect vectors. This role is situated within a renowned laboratory led by Professor Andrea Crisanti.
Research Focus: Our work emphasizes advanced molecular biology and genetic techniques aimed at understanding and controlling malaria-carrying mosquito populations. The primary objective is to enhance vector control methods, particularly through gene drive technologies that target the reproductive capabilities of Anopheles mosquitoes, the primary vectors of malaria. Our innovative strategies are designed to suppress populations by inducing sterility in female mosquitoes and favoring male offspring.
Key Responsibilities: As a vital member of the Crisanti group, you will take initiative in planning and executing innovative research projects. Collaboration with a diverse team within the Target Malaria research consortium is essential, as we aim to develop and test groundbreaking genetic solutions. You will also engage with other scientists at various institutions, fostering a collaborative research environment.
Qualifications:
- A PhD in molecular biology or a closely related field, or nearing completion, with practical research experience and a publication record in reputable journals.
- Hands-on experience with molecular cloning techniques (e.g., Gibson Assembly, Golden Gate), mosquito husbandry, and DNA/RNA sequencing data analysis.
- Essential experience in molecular methods for controlling mosquito disease vectors, alongside a solid understanding of molecular biology, genetics, statistical analysis, and CRISPR-Cas9 technologies.
- Familiarity with data science and programming (e.g., R, modeling software) is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to develop and implement new concepts and a creative approach to problem-solving.
- A strong passion for addressing and resolving scientific challenges.
Working Conditions: This is a full-time, fixed-term position, with a hybrid working arrangement available. The starting salary will be determined based on experience, with initial appointments typically made at the lower end of the salary scale.
