London, Greater London, United Kingdom WELLCOME TRUST Full time

Salary:
£78,413

Contract type:
Permanent

The Wellcome Trust is a prominent global charitable organization dedicated to enhancing health worldwide through scientific funding, policy advocacy, and collaborative partnerships.

With a commitment to invest £16bn over the next decade, we aim to support groundbreaking discoveries in life sciences, health, and well-being, while addressing three critical global health challenges: mental health, infectious diseases, and the intersection of climate and health.

The Infectious Disease Strategic Programme (IDSP) is seeking a Research Lead to spearhead a research initiative focused on bridging significant knowledge gaps in vector-borne diseases and fostering innovative solutions to combat these health threats.

We invite applications from individuals with expertise in formulating and executing strategies within global health to enhance our comprehension of disease transmission and expedite the creation of novel interventions aimed at alleviating the impact of vector-borne diseases.

This is an exciting opportunity to join Wellcome under the leadership of our new CEO, who brings a fresh vision to our organization.

The IDSP is a nascent team, presenting a unique chance to contribute to shaping the future trajectory of our vector-borne disease initiatives.

The IDSP concentrates on two pivotal factors influencing infectious diseases: environmental changes and antimicrobial resistance.

We adopt a preventative stance, merging our interest in understanding these factors with the development and application of interventions, including vector control, vaccines, and small molecules.

Our geographical focus encompasses regions in Africa and South Asia.

We seek a candidate passionate about global health, capable of collaborating effectively within the IDSP team and across Wellcome to identify and address critical research gaps related to vector-borne diseases, particularly concerning Aedes-borne arboviruses, Schistosomiasis, and Leishmaniasis.

In this role, you will join a multidisciplinary, collaborative, and enthusiastic team (the Health Systems & Environment team) dedicated to innovating vector control technologies, addressing regulatory challenges, enhancing our understanding of disease transmission, and filling essential knowledge gaps that inform policymakers on the effective use of vector-control strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Health Systems & Environment (HS&E) team in convening, funding, and disseminating insights aligned with the Infectious Disease team strategy by leading and executing key projects, including scoping, strategic planning, and implementation of activities within the vector-borne disease workstream.
  • Lead a team as necessary (through direct line management and/or matrix management) to advance the strategic objectives of the vector-borne disease area.
  • Oversee, evaluate, and promote the vector-borne disease initiatives of the HS&E team, seeking guidance from specialist advisors and commissioning research as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Head to achieve the strategic goals of the vector-borne disease area, which may involve specific projects and activities such as:
  • Identify and develop strategies to leverage emerging opportunities within vector-borne diseases, including addressing key knowledge gaps on transmission and creating innovative vector-control strategies with a focus on cost-effectiveness and optimal intervention usage.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with key stakeholders to implement essential components of the Infectious Disease strategy, including managing senior stakeholder relationships with partner organizations.
  • Deliver impactful activities that align with the broader objectives of the vector-borne disease area.
  • Contribute to fostering a diverse and inclusive culture across the organization, collaborating across various departments.
To excel in this position, you will possess:

  • An advanced degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrated breadth of research expertise in the field of vectors/vector-borne diseases through relevant experience in academic, industrial, funding agency, or charitable settings. Familiarity with Aedes-borne arboviruses, Schistosomiasis, and Leishmaniasis is advantageous.
  • Ability to pinpoint critical research gaps within the targeted vector-borne diseases and identify potential partners/stakeholders for collaboration.
  • Experience in formulating strategies to address key research gaps in vector-borne diseases, including vector control strategies (considering cost-effectiveness and optimal intervention use), and/or understanding the role of vectors in disease transmission and epidemiology.
  • Significant experience and knowledge in utilizing scientific approaches to mitigate the burden of infectious diseases in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
  • A demonstrable commitment to leveraging science to alleviate the burden of infectious diseases in LMICs.
To apply, please upload your current CV and complete our brief application process.

Interview dates:
w/c 16th and 23rd September
