Lead Research Associate in Epidemiology and Medical Statistics

London, Greater London, United Kingdom University of Bristol Full time
Position Overview

The University of Bristol is looking for a dedicated and skilled postdoctoral researcher with a background in medical statistics, particularly in the context of epidemiology and public health studies. This role is integral to our research team, which is supported by Cancer Research UK, focusing on the analysis of data from a significant long-term randomized controlled trial aimed at addressing crucial questions that will shape prostate cancer screening policies on both national and international levels.

This position offers an exceptional opportunity for a postdoctoral researcher to advance their career through the secondary analysis of an ongoing research trial. The funding for this role is provided by a CRUK grant, which seeks to address pressing policy questions by utilizing data from the CAP (cluster randomized trial of PSA testing for prostate cancer) and ProtecT (Prostate testing for cancer and treatment) trials, boasting up to 18 years of follow-up data. These trials encompass the largest prospective dataset available on metastatic and fatal prostate cancer post-randomization to screening, significantly influencing screening and treatment policies worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will take charge of developing and executing statistical analysis plans (SAPs) under the guidance of the senior statistician, collaborating closely with a diverse team of cancer research scientists and PhD candidates.

The primary objectives include:

  1. Assessing the individual and combined efficacy of previously collected epidemiological data (e.g., insulin-like growth factors), clinical metrics (e.g., body mass index; urinary symptoms), and polygenic risk information (alongside age, PSA levels, stage, and Gleason score) to forecast 15-year prostate cancer metastases and mortality rates based on ProtecT follow-up.
  2. Analyzing existing post-diagnostic risk stratification tools (e.g., CPG, AUA-I, CAPRA, Predict Prostate) to evaluate their effectiveness in predicting 15-year prostate cancer outcomes in screen-detected cases, and determining whether performance is enhanced by incorporating genetic, epidemiological, and clinical data, again based on ProtecT follow-up.

The findings from this research will contribute valuable insights into the pre- and post-diagnostic identification of men who are most likely to benefit from early detection of prostate cancer.

Candidate Profile

We are in search of a talented and passionate postdoctoral researcher with a solid foundation in medical statistics as applied to epidemiology and public health research. A PhD in epidemiology, medical statistics, data science, or a related quantitative field is essential.
