Senior Epidemiology and Medical Statistics Research Associate
2 months ago
The University of Bristol is looking for a dedicated and skilled postdoctoral researcher with a background in medical statistics, particularly as it pertains to epidemiology and public health studies. This role involves joining a research team funded by Cancer Research UK, focusing on the analysis of data from a long-term randomized controlled trial aimed at addressing critical questions relevant to prostate cancer screening policies.
Opportunity for Career DevelopmentThis position offers an exceptional chance for a postdoctoral researcher to advance their career through the secondary analysis of an ongoing research trial. The project is supported by a CRUK grant that seeks to resolve significant policy questions by utilizing the combined data from the CAP (cluster randomized trial of PSA testing for prostate cancer) and ProtecT (Prostate testing for cancer and treatment) trials, which boast up to 18 years of follow-up data. These trials contain the largest prospective dataset of metastatic and fatal prostate cancer, influencing both national and international screening and treatment guidelines.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be tasked with the development and execution of statistical analysis plans (SAPs) under the guidance of the senior statistician, collaborating closely with a diverse team of cancer research scientists and PhD students.
The primary objectives include:
- Assessing the individual and combined effectiveness of previously collected epidemiological data (e.g., insulin-like growth factors), clinical data (e.g., body mass index; urinary symptoms), and polygenic risk factors (along with age, PSA levels, stage, and Gleason score) to predict 15-year outcomes for prostate cancer metastases and mortality based on ProtecT follow-up.
- Evaluating existing post-diagnostic risk-stratification tools (e.g., CPG, AUA-I, CAPRA, Predict Prostate) for their ability to forecast 15-year prostate cancer metastases and mortality in patients diagnosed through screening, and determining whether performance is enhanced with the inclusion of genetic, epidemiological, and clinical data from ProtecT follow-up.
The findings from this research will contribute significantly to the understanding of how to identify men who are most likely to benefit from early detection strategies.
Candidate ProfileWe are in search of a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher who possesses a PhD in epidemiology, medical statistics, data science, or a related quantitative field, with experience in medical statistics applied to epidemiology and public health research.
