Job Overview

The UK Health Security Agency is seeking an Epidemiological Research Scientist to join our national Respiratory Virus team. Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the national epidemiological monitoring of seasonal respiratory viruses and COVID-19 in the UK through routine and specialized data collection, management, and processing tasks.
  • Supporting the continuous enhancement of the team's epidemiological analysis and outputs.
  • Aiding in the development of innovative systems and methodologies to fulfill the growing demand for near real-time epidemiological data.
  • Participating in the design, execution, and analysis of targeted surveys for investigating outbreaks and incidents related to respiratory viral infections.
  • Collaborating with senior staff to draft and produce surveillance or scientific reports on seasonal respiratory viruses and COVID-19 for national and international dissemination, including peer-reviewed publications.
  • Engaging with stakeholders to troubleshoot issues and ensure timely data collection.

Role Responsibilities

The primary duties of this position involve epidemiological monitoring and surveillance of seasonal respiratory viruses and COVID-19, operating within the Immunisation and Vaccine-Preventable Diseases Division in the Respiratory Virus section.

The incumbent will contribute to routine and enhanced surveillance systems for respiratory viral infections, facilitating data collection, validation, and the generation of regular surveillance intelligence. This role includes liaising with stakeholders to address challenges and ensure the timely acquisition of data necessary for producing surveillance intelligence.

The post holder will develop automated processes and solutions to address the increasing need for near real-time epidemiological information and data. They will analyze and interpret surveillance data collected through these processes and manage more complex or sensitive data requests. This will necessitate the application of analytical, statistical, and database expertise.

Additionally, this role will involve conducting epidemiological investigations of infectious disease incidents and outbreaks, supporting various teams across the directorate, local Health Protection Teams, and collaborating with other partners. Responsibilities include designing, implementing, analyzing, and interpreting targeted surveys for respiratory viral infection outbreaks, as well as conducting analytical studies in diverse settings and assisting team members in these efforts. The post holder will contribute to public health scientific analyses and report writing on specific projects, including regular and ad-hoc publications and peer-reviewed articles.

Essential Qualifications

Candidates will be evaluated based on the following essential criteria:

  • A primary degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of information governance and its relevance to surveillance and epidemiological data.
  • Proven experience in managing, analyzing, and reporting on surveillance and epidemiological data.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and evaluate epidemiological data.
  • Experience in drafting scientific papers, reports, and presentations.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems and database software, including Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, as well as statistical analysis software such as STATA, SQL, and/or R.
