Position Overview:
The Surgical Support Assistant will be an integral member of the peri-operative team, collaborating closely with anaesthetic and recovery personnel.


This role involves assisting qualified Operating Theatre staff in providing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures, examinations, or treatments, following the completion of necessary training.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Transportation Duties:
    • Prepare, clean, and inspect patient trolleys/ beds.
    • Assist in conveying patients between wards and the operating theatre.
    • Support safe lifting, turning, and positioning of patients.
  • Housekeeping Responsibilities:
    • Help maintain cleanliness and stock levels in the operating department before, during, and after procedures.
    • Provide general assistance to the multi-disciplinary team in the operating rooms, such as adjusting lights and collecting additional instruments.
  • Technical Support:
    • Perform circulation duties, including tying gowns, opening sterile packs, and assisting with swab, instrument, and needle counts.
    • Deliver messages within the department.
    • Assist in completing documentation and entering data into computer systems.
    • After appropriate training, prepare patients for procedures.
    • Undertake any other relevant duties as assigned by the Theatre Manager or their deputy.
  • Patient Care:
    • Assist qualified theatre staff in assessing, implementing, evaluating, and recording care provided to patients undergoing surgery, examinations, or treatments.
    • Help compile the theatre register, recovery register, and theatre computer information system.

On Call Requirements:
The Surgical Support Assistant will be expected to work according to service needs and participate in the on-call rota as required by the service.
