Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated Regional Network Officer for Southern Scotland to contribute to our mission of enhancing environmental stewardship. This role is part-time and focuses on supporting our operational activities related to land networks.
Role Details
The Regional Network Officer position allows for hybrid working arrangements, where employees can split their time between the office and remote work. The designated location will serve as your official workplace.
This role may be based in various locations within Southern Scotland.

Your Area of Expertise
As the Regional Network Officer, you will join our Surface Observations team, playing a crucial role in delivering high-quality weather services and climate science. Your efforts will have a significant global impact, aiding individuals and organizations in making informed decisions.
This position offers hybrid working options, with an expectation of in-office presence at least once a week and occasional visits to support broader team initiatives. You will travel extensively within the region, becoming proficient in land surface meteorological instruments and observational techniques.
Your responsibilities will include overseeing site performance, installing meteorological equipment, responding to incidents, and ensuring the maintenance of observing instruments to uphold the highest standards of data quality and availability. You will serve as the primary contact for voluntary observers and site authorities in your designated area.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate and verify the suitability of observation sites, install or repair equipment, and provide guidance on instrument deployment to meet observing standards.
- Train and support voluntary observers to enhance the quality and quantity of their observations.
- Monitor the quality, timeliness, and availability of observations, ensuring compliance with requirements through performance oversight and instrument calibration.
- Manage and archive site metadata in line with international standards.
- Plan site visits efficiently and maintain adequate stocks of calibrated instruments and necessary resources.
- Collaborate with colleagues and regional officers to promote a network-wide quality management approach.
Candidate Profile
Essential Skills and Experience:
- A comprehensive understanding of land observation systems and the principles of manual and automatic instrumentation.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and prioritize effectively.
- A flexible approach to work, with a willingness to adapt to varying schedules and undertake overnight travel as needed.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build effective relationships with external stakeholders and team members.
- Ability to communicate technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
- Willingness to transport and install equipment in various environments, including challenging terrains.
- Possession of a valid UK driving license and readiness to drive for work-related purposes.
