Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Regional Network Officer for Southern Scotland to contribute to our mission of environmental stewardship. This role is part-time and focuses on supporting our operational activities related to Land Networks.

Role Details

The Regional Network Officer position may offer hybrid working arrangements, allowing for a combination of office and remote work. This is a voluntary arrangement, and the designated location will serve as your official workplace.

This role can be based in various locations within Southern Scotland.

Our part-time opportunity requires a commitment of hours per week, and we strive to accommodate flexible working patterns that prioritize the well-being of our team members.

Impactful Work

Our expertise spans various fields, including science, technology, and climate communication, enabling us to provide accurate weather services and climate predictions. We empower individuals, industries, and governments to make informed decisions for safety and prosperity.

  • We are committed to positive environmental and social impacts.
  • We prioritize continuous learning and improvement.
  • We embed our purpose in all decision-making processes.
  • We value partnerships and inclusivity.
  • We strive for innovation to enhance customer experiences.

Your Expertise

We are looking for a skilled Regional Network Officer (RNO) to join our Surface Observations team, contributing to global climate science and weather services. This role involves extensive travel across the region, where you will become proficient in land surface meteorological instruments and observation techniques.

You will oversee site performance, install meteorological instruments, respond to incidents, and ensure the maintenance of observing equipment to uphold high standards of observation quality and availability. As the primary contact for voluntary observers and site authorities, your role is crucial.

While the position is primarily based at our Edinburgh office, other locations may be considered based on business needs. The role requires physical capability to transport and install equipment at weather stations, which may involve traversing challenging terrain and working in various weather conditions. Overnight travel will be necessary for approximately 20% of the role.

You will serve as the regional representative for Southern Scotland, ensuring the quality and availability of weather and climate observations from surface-based networks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and ensure the suitability of observing sites, install or repair equipment, and advise on instrument deployment to meet observing standards.
  • Guide and support voluntary observers to enhance the quality and quantity of their observations.
  • Monitor and ensure the quality, timeliness, and availability of observations from sites, including instrument calibration and performance evaluation.
  • Manage and archive site metadata in compliance with international standards.
  • Plan site visits efficiently and maintain adequate local stocks of calibrated instruments and equipment.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Surface Observing team and RNOs in adjacent regions to uphold a network-wide quality management approach.

Candidate Profile

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Broad knowledge of land observing systems and understanding of manual and automatic instrumentation principles.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and prioritize effectively.
  • Willingness to work outside standard hours and undertake overnight visits to observing locations as needed.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and build effective relationships with stakeholders.
  • Proficient in communicating technical information clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Physical capability to transport and install equipment in various conditions.
  • Valid UK driving license and readiness to drive for work purposes.

Compensation and Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, we offer a comprehensive benefits package, including contributions to a Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Our organization is recognized as a 'Great Place to Work UK 2023' and has received accolades for being among the 'Best Workplaces in Tech' and 'Best Workplaces for Women.'

Your total reward package will reflect your contributions and commitment to our mission.
