Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Regional Network Officer for Southern Scotland to contribute to our environmental initiatives. This is a part-time position focused on supporting our Land Networks operational efforts.
Role Description
As the Regional Network Officer, you may have the opportunity for hybrid work arrangements, allowing you to balance your time between the office and remote work. This role is voluntary and non-contractual, with the specified location serving as your primary workplace.
This position may be based in various locations within Southern Scotland.

Your Area of Expertise
We are looking for an outstanding Regional Network Officer (RNO) to join our Surface Observations team, playing a vital role in delivering essential weather services and advanced climate science. Your contributions will have a significant global impact.
This role allows for hybrid working, with the expectation of at least one office day per week and occasional visits to support the broader Surface Networks team. You will travel extensively within the region, becoming an expert in land surface meteorological instruments and observational methods.
Your responsibilities will include overseeing site performance, installing meteorological instruments, responding to incidents, and maintaining observing equipment to ensure the highest standards of observation quality and availability. You will serve as the primary contact for voluntary observers and site authorities in your designated area.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate and determine the suitability of observing sites, install or repair equipment, and advise on instrument deployment to meet observing standards.
- Guide and provide feedback to voluntary observers to enhance the quality and quantity of their observations.
- Monitor performance to ensure the quality, timeliness, and availability of observations from sites, including instrument calibration and accuracy.
- Manage and archive site metadata in compliance with international standards.
- Plan site visits efficiently and maintain adequate local stocks of calibrated instruments and observing equipment.
- Collaborate with colleagues in the Surface Observing team and RNOs in adjacent regions to uphold a network-wide quality management approach.
Candidate Profile
Essential Skills and Experience:
- A comprehensive understanding of land observing systems and the principles of manual and automatic instrumentation.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and prioritize effectively.
- A flexible work approach, with a willingness to work outside standard hours and undertake overnight site visits as necessary.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to influence and build relationships with external stakeholders and team members.
- Ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
- Willingness to transport and install equipment at weather stations, including traversing challenging terrain in varying weather conditions.
- Possession of a valid UK driving license and a readiness to drive for work purposes.
