Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has emerged for a locum consultant in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology. This position is designed to be an interim role, primarily to provide coverage during maternity leave. The successful candidate will become a part of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at North Middlesex University Hospital, collaborating with a team of 17 other consultants.
The new appointee will integrate into a dynamic and supportive department that is dedicated to maintaining high standards of patient care.
Main Responsibilities
The appointee is expected to actively participate in the delivery of the undergraduate curriculum, providing education to both trainees and medical students affiliated with the department.
North Middlesex University Hospital is undergoing significant transformation, featuring a newly constructed, state-of-the-art Accident and Emergency Department, which includes a dedicated Gynaecology Emergency Room. The facility boasts an active Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit and Emergency Gynaecology Unit, staffed by trained nurse ultrasonographers and supported by multiple consultant sessions, ultrasound machines with advanced Doppler capabilities, and daily beta-hCG assays.
The hospital has received designation as a Cancer Unit within the North Central London Oncology network.
Modern facilities are available for minimal access gynaecological surgery, equipped with advanced technology including video cameras, laparoscopes, and hystero-resectoscopes. The increasing demand for minimal access surgery from general practitioners and patients has led to the establishment of weekly outpatient hysteroscopy clinics.
Currently, there is one weekly session dedicated to gynaecological urodynamics. The local health authority employs a senior nurse incontinence advisor, and there is an active support group for incontinence, facilitated by a senior physiotherapist.

Detailed Job Description and Responsibilities
This role encompasses general gynaecology and obstetrics, requiring 8 Programmed Activities per week, divided into 7.0 Direct Clinical Care and 1.0 Supporting Professional Activities. A special interest in high-risk obstetrics, adolescent gynaecology, and two-week cancer pathway management is desirable. The on-call consultant will oversee the caesarean section list and Labour Ward, as well as gynaecology from 4 PM to 10 PM, alternating on-site coverage with other team members. The on-call commitment is structured as 1:16 at North Middlesex University Hospital, with a similar ratio for gynaecology on-call duties. Clinical sessions will include weekly antenatal clinics, general gynaecology/rapid access clinics, and potentially community gynaecology clinic sessions, in addition to administrative responsibilities. There is an opportunity to develop a special interest session aligned with departmental needs.

Essential Criteria
- Full GMC registration
- Medical Degree – MBBS or equivalent
- MRCOG or an equivalent specialist qualification
- CCT or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee
- ATSM in advanced labour ward
