Job Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a locum consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology. This interim position is designed to cover maternity leave within the esteemed Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at North Middlesex University Hospital. The successful candidate will collaborate with a dedicated team of 17 consultants.
The new appointee will become part of a dynamic and supportive department that is committed to delivering exceptional patient care.
Main Responsibilities
The appointee is expected to actively participate in the undergraduate curriculum, providing education to both trainees and medical students affiliated with the department.
North Middlesex University Hospital is undergoing significant enhancements, including a newly constructed, state-of-the-art Accident and Emergency Department featuring a dedicated Gynaecology Emergency Room. The facility boasts an active Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit and Emergency Gynaecology Unit, staffed by trained nurse ultrasonographers and equipped with advanced ultrasound technology.
The hospital has been recognized as a Cancer Unit within the North Central London Oncology network, ensuring comprehensive care for patients.
Modern facilities for minimal access gynaecological surgery are available, including video technology, laparoscopes, and hystero-resectoscopes. The growing demand for minimal access surgery has been supported by weekly outpatient hysteroscopy clinics.
Currently, there is a weekly gynaecological urodynamic session, complemented by a senior nurse incontinence advisor and an active support group led by a senior physiotherapist.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
This role encompasses general gynaecology and obstetrics, with a commitment of 8 PAs per week, including 7.0 DCC and 1.0 SPA. A special interest in high-risk obstetrics, adolescent gynaecology, and two-week cancer pathway management is desirable. The on-call consultant will oversee the caesarean section list and Labour Ward, alternating on-site coverage with team colleagues.
There is a 1:16 on-call commitment for the North Middlesex University Hospital, alongside a hot week commitment for gynaecology on call. Clinical sessions will include weekly antenatal clinics, general gynaecology and rapid access clinics, with potential for community gynaecology clinic sessions.

Essential Criteria
- Full GMC registration
- Medical Degree – MBBS or equivalent
- MRCOG or appropriate specialist qualification
- CCT or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of AAC
- ATSM in advanced labour ward

- Higher degree MD, PhD
