About the Role:

We are seeking a proactive Publishing Editor to oversee the Media and Communication portfolio.

Your responsibilities will include acquiring and publishing a diverse range of high-quality research monographs, edited collections, handbooks, upper-level textbooks, major reference works, and open access titles. You will play a key role in expanding the portfolio while managing editorial processes and implementing strategies to achieve departmental goals. This position will report to the Executive Editor for Film, Cultural, and Media Studies, with expectations to commission 60-80 titles annually.

We are looking for a target-oriented, dynamic individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment. You should be a creative self-starter with a profound understanding of academic publishing, an entrepreneurial mindset, and exceptional communication and presentation skills.

Role Responsibilities:
  • Manage and expand a publishing program that delivers competitive and profitable products aligned with the company's publishing strategy.
  • Conduct essential publishing acquisition activities, including:
  • Evaluating proposals and manuscripts for commercial viability and audience suitability
  • Researching market trends to identify new authors and titles
  • Maintaining relationships with existing authors and editorial board members
  • Supporting authors in developing their projects, including open access initiatives
  • Negotiating publishing contract terms
  • Acting as a point of contact for authors throughout the publication process
  • Ensuring adherence to editorial policies and meeting management goals
  • Building and maintaining a robust network of authors and editors through engagement within the research community
  • Promoting the brand through virtual interactions and attending academic conferences
  • Collaborating with editorial services, marketing, production, and other departments on projects
  • Assisting in the training and mentoring of new and junior team members
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

Essential:
  • Degree level education or equivalent in a relevant field
  • Experience in academic publishing
  • Strong networking, negotiation, and acquisition skills
  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities
  • Willingness to travel
  • Numerate, analytical, and proficient with IT systems, with attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently
  • Resourceful and proactive in addressing challenges
  • Strong team collaboration and relationship-building skills
  • Target-driven with a focus on achieving objectives and KPIs
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and adaptability to change.
